CALGARY (CP) - The Canadian junior men's hockey team released 11 players from selection camp Thursday morning, including 16-year-old forward John Tavares of the Oshawa Generals.

Tavares fell short in his bid to be the first 16-year-old to play for the Canadian junior team since Sidney Crosby. Goaltender Trevor Cann of the Peterborough Petes and defencemen Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm, Keaton Ellerby of the Kamloops Blazers and Patrick McNeill of the Saginaw Spirit were also returned to their respective club teams.

Codey Burki of the Brandon Wheat Kings, Angelo Esposito of the Quebec Remparts, Ben Maxwell of the Kootenay Ice, Mathieu Perreault of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Devin Setoguchi of the Prince George Cougars and Chris Stewart of the Kingston Frontenacs were the forwards cut.

The selection camp roster stood at 28 players following the cuts, with four goalies, nine defencemen and 15 forwards remaining.

Six more players will be released Friday morning when the Canadian team is named.
