TORONTO (CP) - John Ferguson was always ready to drop the gloves if need be during his days as a scrappy NHL forward and he needs that fighting spirit more than ever now that he's battling cancer.

It'll come in handy. "Yeah, right about now," he said Monday. His next treatment is Friday at Princess Margaret Hospital. "I had a body scan last Friday and, hopefully, it's clearing up," he said on his way into the AHL all-star game luncheon. "They'll let me know this week how it's going.

"Hopefully, it's good."

He lives near Windsor, Ont., and is staying with his son John Ferguson Jr., the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, while undergoing treatments.

"There's no pain in my body anymore," he said. "I feel good."

He was at Air Canada Centre for the Montreal-Toronto NHL game last Saturday.

"That was the first game I've been to for a while," he said. "But I watch three or four a night (on television).

"I haven't lost a beat."

He's a consultant to the San Jose Sharks.
