PLYMOUTH, Mich. (CP) - Jan Mursak scored twice while defenceman Nigel Williams chipped in a goal and an assist as the Saginaw Spirit dropped the Plymouth Whalers 6-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday.
Saginaw (25-12-0-2) pulled within a point of Plymouth (25-11-1-2) atop the OHL's West Division. The loss was the first in regulation for the Whalers since November 18, a span of 16 games (13-0-1-2).
"It's a huge win for us, coming into a barn that's been tough to win in," said Williams. "It's boosts us up a bit to get a big win against a good team."
Patrick McNeill and Ryan McDonough added singles for Saginaw, who scored four times with the extra man, including two with two man advantages 28 seconds apart late in the second period.
Cody Bass chipped in three assists in his first game in a Spirit uniform, while overage defencemen Mitch Maunu and Andrew Hotham each had two helpers in their Saginaw debuts.
"It was a big game for the boys," stated Bass, who came over from Mississauga in a deal last Monday. "Plymouth has had our number since early in the year so it was good to get the win."
Patrick Asselin added a late empty-netter.
