LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (CP) - Haley Irwin scored the game-winning goal and Canada kicked off a three-game under-22 women's hockey series with a 3-1 win over the United States on Thursday.

Canada opened the scoring early in the second period at the tail end of a power play. Stephanie Jones of Grande Prairie, Alta., skated in front of the net from the right side and slipped a low backhanded shot past U.S. goaltender Molly Schaus.

The Canadians went up 2-0 when Irwin, from Thunder Bay, Ont., tapped in Rebecca Johnston's shot that hit the post.

Canada made it 3-0 when Laura Fridfinnson of Arborg, Man., scored in the third period.
