Irving on Team Canada

Everett Silvertips goaltender Leland Irving will play for Team Canada at the 2007 World Junior Championships in Leksand and Mora, Sweden from December 26, 2006 through January 5, 2007. Irving is the first Everett Silvertip to play for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Overall the Silvertips will have two players playing at the international event, Silvertips forward Peter Mueller will suit up for Team USA.

Irving, the first round draft pick of the Calgary Flames (26th overall) in the 2006 NHL Draft is currently leading all WHL goaltenders in Goals Against Average (1.55), Save Percentage (.939%), Shutouts (6) and is 2nd in the WHL in Wins (19). The Swan Hills, Alberta native currently holds Silvertips franchise records in Wins (65), Games Played (114) and Minutes Played (6323). Leland has played in International tournaments in previous seasons. Irving earned a silver medal for Team Pacific at the 2005 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and won gold for Team Canada at the 2005 Under-18 World Cup. Irving recently represented the Silvertips and the WHL at the 2006 ADT Canada/Russia Challenge earning a victory on November 29 in Chilliwack, BC.

Overall seven players from the WHL were named to Team Canada's World Junior Team. Irving will be joined by fellow WHL netminder Carey Price from the Tri-City Americans.

The team departs for Europe on Friday afternoon where it will train in Vierumakki, Finland from December 16-19. Canada will play in two exhibition games, on December 20th in Helsinki against Finland, and on December 22nd in Stockholm against Sweden.

Canada has medaled in eight straight World Junior Championships including: back to back gold medal performances in 2006 and 2005, silver medals in 2004, 2003, 2002, 1999 and bronze medals in 2001 and 2000.
