The Red Wings signed Johnson during the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. But he was diagnosed with a heart ailment during his pre-training camp physical and never played.
Johnson, 35, signed his retirement papers last Thursday before the Wings' home opener against the Canucks.
"It's still all a bit of a shock," Johnson said. "I've gone from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, and at the end of the day, no one would clear me to play."
