(Sports Network) - The Montreal Canadiens try to narrow the gap in the Northeast Division race tonight when they welcome the Buffalo Sabres to Bell Centre.

With 36 points, the Habs are second in the division race -- eight behind the frontrunning Sabres.

Montreal ended a two-game skid on Thursday, as Saku Koivu netted two power- play goals and added an assist to spearhead a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Michael Ryder and Sheldon Souray each added two assists and Cristobal Huet made 25 saves for the Habs.

Koivu has tallied four goals and two assists in three games so far this month. He already has two multi-goal efforts in December.

Montreal begins a four-game homestand tonight and will host Boston on Tuesday.
