GDT: Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings will aim for a fourth consecutive victory tonight, when they visit the New York Rangers in a battle of Original Six franchises at Madison Square Garden.

This evening's game also will mark the first time Rangers winger Brendan Shanahan is playing against his former club since signing with New York in the offseason. Shanahan, owner of 624 career goals, won three Stanley Cups during his nine-season stint in Detroit. He is leading the Rangers in goal scoring this year with 26 tallies.

The Red Wings were last in action Friday and posted a 5-3 win over the visiting St. Louis Blues. Kris Draper's short-handed goal in the third period proved to be the game-winner as Detroit picked up its 10th straight victory at home.

Henrik Zetterberg had a four-point night with a goal and three assists, while Tomas Holmstrom posted two goals and an assist for the Red Wings. Daniel Cleary also scored, Nicklas Lidstrom had three assists and Dominik Hasek finished with 24 saves.

Red Wings rally to clip Rangers

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Robert Lang and Henrik Zetterberg scored less than two minutes apart in the third period, as the Detroit Red Wings rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the New York Rangers, 4-3, at Madison Square Garden. It was Detroit's first visit to the Garden since October 25, 2003.

Jiri Hudler and Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, which has won four straight games and nine of its last 12. Veteran netminder Dominik Hasek also recovered from a shaky start, surrendering three first-period goals on just seven shots, to finish with 17 saves.

Brendan Shanahan, Michael Nylander and Marcel Hossa tallied first-peri9od goals for the Rangers, who have dropped three in a row. Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves.

Shanahan was facing the Red Wings for the first time since leaving the team last summer to sign with New York as an unrestricted free agent. Overall, he scored 309 goals while leading Detroit to three Stanley Cups in nine seasons. Last season the left winger scored 40 goals, as the Red Wings captured the President's Trophy for the best regular season record.

After a scoreless second period, New York surrendered its lead as Detroit put up three unanswered goals.

Hudler started the spurt, sending a backhand shot past Lundqvist at 2:31 to cut the margin to 3-2. Lang then got credit for a tip-in with 9:06 remaining to even the score.

The Red Wings finally jumped on top, lighting the lamp on the power play after the Rangers fumbled the puck in their own end behind the net. Zetterberg nabbed the disc coming around the left side and wristed it past Lundqvist with 7:24 left.

The Rangers pulled Lundqvist with under a minute remaining, but the man- advantage didn't help as Detroit hung on for the victory.

The Rangers jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, taking advantage of a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone along the right boards. Shanahan eventually gathered the puck, using a quick release on a wrist shot that went up and over the blocker of Hasek at 2:18.

The second goal then came in short order, as the Blueshirts tallied just 13 seconds after the first score. Off the dump in, Hasek misplayed the puck behind the net, allowing Nylander to send a backhand shot into the goal before the netminder could recover.
