In the midst of an absolutely horrible season from a team standpoint, the Flyers' Alexandre Picard gets a plus for an individual night for the record books. He had five assists against the Devils Thursday to become just the second rookie defenceman in NHL history to notch five or more helpers in a single game.
Former Calder Trophy winner Gary Suter of the Calgary Flames was the first to accomplish the feat.
Marian Hossa of the Atlanta Thrashers is a proven sniper; one of the best scorers in the game today. But he gets a minus for his effort on penalty shots. He's been awful, and on Thursday missed for the seventh time in nine attempts. Hossa now holds the all-time record for most penalty shot misses in NHL history.
Alexander Ovechkin's goal against the Panthers on Thursday didn't have much bearing on the game, but it did earn him a plus for keeping his personal streak alive. Not only does he have a point in every single game of the New Year, his 13-game point scoring streak is the longest in the NHL this season.
