The Vancouver Giants posted their eighth win in nine tries over the Chilliwack Bruinsthis season. On Friday night, the Giants outlasted the Bruins 3-1 and in the process established a new club record with 108 points on the season.
James Wright would get the only goal of the first period, neatly deflecting a Nick Ross point blast over the shoulder of Bruins goalie Mark Friesen midway through period one. Wright's nineteenth goal of the season had the G-Men up 1-0 after one period.
Kevin Sundher would tie things up for the Bruins early in period two, pouncing on a loose puck and beating Giants keeper Tyson Sexsmith to tie things up at one. Sundher's sixteenth goal of his rookie season would equalize the game. Sexsmith kept his team in the game with a number of quality saves in the second period as the Bruins would fire thirteen shots on goal in period two. The Priddis, AB resident would stand tall between the pipes and the Giants would be tied 1-1 after forty minutes.
In the third period, the Giants started the period down two men, but did a great job on the penalty kill, limiting the Bruins to just one shot. Midway through the final stanza, Garry Nunn would continue his hot play. After setting up Mike Berube at the point, Nunn charged the goal and was able to convert the Berube point blast into the game winning goal, as he jumped in with JT Barnett and planted the winner past Friesen. It is Nunn's second consecutive game winning goal, and also the second straight game that JT Barnett has recorded a point. A late empty netter by James Henry would seal the deal as the Giants would win the game 3-1 and move their record to a Western Conference best 52-7-1-3 for 108 points through 63 games.
The loss put the final nail in the coffin of the Chilliwack Bruins playoff ambitions. Chilliwack falls to defeat for the 44th time this season and sees their playoff hopes killed by the Giants for the third consecutive season. The Bruins will fail to quality for the post season for the first time in their three seasons as a franchise.
Vancouver continues on their eight games in ten days junket. On Saturday night, the Giants will once again visit the Everett Silvertips at the Comcast Arena in Everett, WA. You can catch all the WHITE SPOT GIANTS HOCKEY action on AM 650, with the pregame show at 630 pm. Dave Sheldon and Bill Wilms will have the call of the game at 7 pm from the Pacific Northwest.
