Key Players of the Game

Valtteri Filppula needs to improve his offensive game and become a consistent offensive threat at even strength and on the power play with Datsyuk out.

Those guys who have the ability to score, we need them to step up. Some of those guys haven’t been as good as they’re capable of being. Now there’s more ice time.

Everyone thinks he’d be a better player with two more minutes. I’ve never been asked in all my years of coaching, ‘Coach, can you play me two less minutes?’

It (Filppula’s play) hasn’t been as good (as it was at the start of the season), but it was good (Wednesday), so he’ll be on his way back.

Quite a few weak calls against both teams, but when the referees can't lay off the whistles and end up making 8 penalty calls in the first period alone, it's pretty much expected. Then again, considering that Chris Lee was a referee in the game, you probably should have been expecting weak penalty calls before the game even started.

I thought that Kindl looked pretty good beside Kronwall. It let him use his skating ability and show that he could very well be a top four defenseman in the NHL soon. Excellent game from him, and the +2 is a pretty good reward for him, even if it was because Backstrom let two goals in that were shot from behind the goal line. Wish he could have got a goal or assist tonight.

Also, I would like to see Filppula and Bertuzzi shoot a bit more. They seem to be in this mindset where they come into the zone on a rush, then hold up and look to pass. I can't really blame them since they're playing on a line with Cleary at the moment, but if they shoot off the rush it opens up the potential of a dirty goal from in front of the net or keeping the opposition off their game a little bit.
