For a team with a championship tradition, a three-game Flyers winning streak wouldn't seem likely to be a cause for celebration in Philadelphia.
When it comes on the heels of a franchise-worst 10-game skid, it is.
"The older guys are just talking more and we're saying what we want," said goalie Robert Esche, who made at least 40 saves in each of the three wins. "There's a lot of professionalism coming into the team right now, and that's what we need. They're all baby steps, they really are.
"It's all great stuff that we're winning and it's an awesome feeling to win, but on the same hand we also know where we're at in this league and that's last place. We have to get out of it."
Philadelphia started this weekend with an NHL-low 11 victories.
The Flyers' best winning run of the season ended Thursday night with a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers. They came out with little energy at the start of their fifth game of an eight-game trip.
"I don't know why we would want to come out flat, after the way things were going," forward Mike Knuble said. "Call us fat cats or something after three wins. That's definitely not the case.
"Now that we had a taste of victory, it should be easier to be geared up and ready to fly out of the gates."
Maybe they will once they get back home where they have won just three games, and none since Nov. 24. The Flyers have two wins on Long Island in that span.
