Flyers Fire Hitchcock; Clarke Steps Down

720 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  hok
Off to their worst start in 15 years, the Philadelphia Flyers cleaned house on Sunday, firing head coach Ken Hitchcock and letting general manager Bob Clarke resign.

Hitchcock told TSN he learned of his fate early Sunday morning. Assistant coach John Stevens has been promoted to Hitchcock's post, while Paul Holmgren will take over Clarke's managing duties.

The Flyers have just one win in their first seven games this season. They lost to the Florida Panthers on Friday night for their fifth straight loss. The Flyers had not lost five in a row since 2002.

On Tuesday, the Flyers were blasted 9-1 by the Buffalo Sabres. The Flyers sent Petr Nedved and Niko Dimitrakos to the AHL the next day, and owner Ed Snider promised more changes.

Snider said Sunday that he conducted a thorough investigation of the team's operations after the Buffalo loss and decided he needed to make a coaching change.

heh .. a 9-1 beating had to start some adjustments.

Both needed to go. Both would NOT adapt to the New NHL.
The days of Dave Schultz and Battleship Kelly are long gone - time to move on.

Not everyone like this new NHL like you do.and i think it stinks. but i am suprised that Bob Clarke did not get things done with the flyers.i have always been a fan of clarke.:dunno:
ahhh ... it stinks so GOOD

 ... awww

It's not really my preference. (eg. I would have loved to see the Goalies get permission to roam, BUT with the caveat that they are fair game to get hit when not connected to the crease - let team staffs sort out the risks)
The new NHL is adapting to realities. Slow grueling defensive hockey might be fun to play, but is NOT fun to watch - especially for people new to the sport.

Actually, I play defense and LOVE harassing the bigger guys - especially if they are punks. I push it to the ref's limit.
BUT
I play recreationally, NOT professionally.

Professional clubs play to ENTERTAIN, because that is what brings in the bucks. The New NHL rules address that - those who adapt to the system get rewarded, those who don't get TOSSED.

The Sabres adapted and are being called he MOST entertaining club in all of sports - and the numbers back it up: 900% increase in *NEW STYLE* jersey sales, a perpetually sold-out arena, even a major spike in HDTV sales for last season's playoffs - the SCF actually rivaled the Super Bowl TV viewership in the Buffalo area.

Wel you have the right to like the new NHL just like i have the right to Hate it. i am just sorry to see that Bobby Clarke could not get things done in philadelphia.
Never liked Ken Hitchcock at all from his days in Dallas... or Bobby Clarke really.

Hey, I'm not much of a fan of the Flyers either, so my heart ain't breaking.

Could the Flyers end up missing the playoffs for the 1st time since... well, I don't really have memory of anything over 10 years from now when it comes to Hockey. :dunno:
