It was a contract dispute. Phoenix, for whatever reason, wouldn't give him a one-way contract (for under a million, mind you) and he filed for arbitration. Then they put him on waivers, Calgary claimed him, and in interviews, Dawes himself thinks he'll sign with the team before his arbitration date.

Very, very good pickup. If he reached Detroit on the waiver wire, I'm sure Holland would have given him a good hard look as well.

Well apperantly Detroit passed him because of the waiver claim procedures wouldhave given Detroit the chance after San Jose, Anaheim, and Dallas. In between them and the Flames who had a chance to claim him would have been: Vancouver and Chicago.

Once a player is placed on waivers, teams have 48 hours to put in a claim on that player. If more than one team places a claim, the team with the lower number of points in the previous season is awarded the player. If no team places a claim, the player can be sent to a minor league affiliate.

Before Nov 1, it is based on the previous seasons final standings. After Nov 1, it is based on the current standings.

Unless they changed the CBA since I last read it.

Flames, Leafs make multi-player deal

The Calgary Flames traded Wayne Primeau and a draft pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday for forward Colin Stuart and defenseman Anton Stralman and Toronto’s 7th round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

For the Flames it definitely was. What I can't really figure out is why the Leafs did it.

Daryl
Burke tried to get Wayne Primeau when he was in Vancouver and Anaheim. It's a good salary dump for the Flames, especially since they got someone back with potential in the deal as well.
