Flames deal knockout punch to Oilers

Owen Nolan potted the game-winner in the closing minutes, as the Flames pulled out a 3-2 win in this season's final installment of the Battle of Alberta Tuesday at Rexall Place, bouncing the rival Oilers from playoff contention. ...more

Oilers fate was set when Nashville got back into the grind. Nashville by far has the easiest end to their schedule of Edmonton, Vancouver and themselves. Ugly.

That being said their playoff drive is happening while the city is flooded with songwriters as NSAI holds their annual Tin Pan South week. Wonder if anybody knows the Preds are that close? Bet the hockey store just off of the Interstate is loving it though.
The Canucks are next on the elimination list.
Canucks.....GONE!!!!!
It was more Nashville that sealed the Oils fate then anything the Flames did, even if they had won this game they would still have been eliminated.

:laugh:If that was true why do you think the Oilers where so down after that loss to the Flames?

you don't get upset when you lose? The lose made it official but even if they had won, they'd still have been out of the playoffs cause of Nashville.

I'm more interested in watching the flames have there annual first round crap out.

You just don't want to admit that the Flames eliminated their biggest rival (your team), the Oilers. You are right about Nashville winning and preventing the Oilers from catching them, but a team isn't suppossed to rely on other teams losing to make it to the dance. So, more so than Nashville, Calgary is responsible for taking out Edmonton.

Yeah but its funny when you make a big deal about eliminating a team thats been missing there top center, defense-men, captain and a top 6 forward for half the season and still make hing interesting in the west. I'd love to see how well calgary would do without Iginla and phanouf.

Please, It was you pushing the fact that the Flames didn't take them out when they did. The Oilers where almost crying after that loss to Calgary so don't try to tell us that the Flames had nothing to do with it.
Oilers did one good thing and that was that win that took out Vancover. I think that more then everything said and done it shows that the Oilers still had the drive to win one more game after the Flames crushed their playoff hopes.

Oh I'm sure it hurt to realize all the effort the oil put in the last month and a half was over before the end of the season, but anybody that saw Nashville's last 10 games on there schedule knew they were going to make the playoffs. At least I can see the oil winning the NW next year.
Problem is that Calgary will over shadow them again, look for the real change to be with Vancover.

I'll say the Oil will be out again next playoff season as well.

I don't see how you can say that, its not like the flames are gonna get any better then this year, infact they might get worse depending on who they can and can't sign in the off-season. The oilers on the other hand can only get better if they stay healthy, and have Garon playing quality starts on a regular basis.

We have Conny, Juice, Nolan, Langkow and Yelle to sign. The Flames could part with three and still be ok. You act as if we don't have anyone in our farm system and besides that we have a GM that knows what he's doing unlike that guy up north.

Yeah sure looks like he knowns everything, you guys won the conference easily against teams with 2 to 3 times as many injuries. Your team which you say is so much better barly made it into the post season over teams like the Oil, Avs and Canucks that had 2 to 3 times the injuries. no some how I just don't think the Flames are gonna walk away with the NW devision or even make the playoffs with ease.
I love the Battle of Alberta. It's the best thing going! Even with one team out of the playoffs there's still a debate raging on about how much the other team sucks. Battle of Alberta isn't just about 8 regular season games, it's a Battle of Alberta for free agents, for best trades, for best fans, for best ice, for best arena popcorn, for best public transit to and from the arena, for best radio work, for best TV announcers, for EVERYTHING! I love it.
I agree, I think it's the best in the NHL and always has been. :bt
