Canadiens vs. Oilers All time Record
After a brief stay in the WHA (1972-79), the Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL in 1979. The Oilers made quite the impression in their early days in the NHL, winning five Stanley Cups and six Conference titles between 1983 and 1990. The Oilers of the 1980s are the last team to have earned a “dynasty” title by the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Canadiens played their first game against the Oilers on December 14, 1979 in Edmonton, falling 5-3.
Montreal and Edmonton, who captured the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990, have met just once in the playoffs, back in 1981. The Oilers swept the Canadiens in three games in their first round series.
