(Sports Network) - When the Boston Bruins signed towering defenseman Zdeno Chara in the offseason, they made a huge upgrade to their blueline.

The only problem is that the move has not yet helped the team become as stingy as it would have liked. That's not to say the 6-foot-9 Chara has been a disappointment, but rather that Boston still has a long way to go in terms of becoming a good defensive unit.

Chara has certainly added a great deal of skill and toughness to Boston's defense, and has an impressive 35 points (9 goals, 26 assists) in 49 games this season. However, he is a minus-seven for the year after playing in the positive for four consecutive seasons in Ottawa.

As a club Boston has given up the third-most goals (192) in the NHL this year and has surrendered less scores than only Philadelphia and Los Angeles, the teams with the lowest two point totals in the entire league.
