TORONTO (CP) - Ray Emery slipped to backup status when the Ottawa Senators spent big bucks to hire goaltender Martin Gerber during the summer, but Emery isn't going to the end of the bench without a battle.

Emery held the Toronto Maple Leafs at bay as they pushed for a tying goal in the third period, and the Senators emerged with a 5-3 pre-season victory Wednesday night.

Chris Neil, Peter Schaefer, Mike Fisher, Daniel Alfredsson and Dean McAmmond scored for the Senators (4-3-0).

Alexander Suglobov, Bryan McCabe and Matt Stajan scored for the Leafs (3-3-0).

Toronto outshot Ottawa 39-31.
