The Devils had a five-game winning streak end with Tuesday's 3-2 loss to visiting Buffalo. Ryan Miller made 31 saves to anchor the Sabres.
Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on 24 shots for the Devils, who fell behind by a 3-0 margin and could never catch up. Erik Rasmussen and Brian Gionta tallied late goals in the third period for New Jersey.
With 36 points, the Devils are two behind the first-place New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division.
New Jersey, which is just 6-8-1 on the road, will host Detroit on Saturday.
