(Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils will try to take over first place in the Atlantic Division tonight, when they battle the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

The Devils have 39 points and are just one behind the idle New York Rangers for the top spot in the division.

New Jersey is coming off a loss Tuesday evening against visiting Atlanta. Slava Kozlov scored the game-winner in the shootout to give the Thrashers a 4-3 victory at Continental Airlines Arena.

Jamie Langenbrunner had a goal and an assist and Martin Brodeur finished with 28 saves for the Devils, who have lost four of their last five games.

New Jersey, which is 7-9-1 as the visiting club, is playing the first of two straight on the road tonight. The Devils will also visit the Thrashers on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Capitals are closing out a three-game homestand tonight. They dropped a 5-4 decision to Tampa Bay on Tuesday after Martin St. Louis burned the Caps with two goals.
