Jeff Costello was credited with two goals and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders never trailed, handing the Waterloo Black Hawks a 4-2 exhibition loss Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

The RoughRiders pulled in front for the first time at 6:45 of the opening period. With goalie C.J. Motte down out of the crease trying to control a rebound and his own defenseman on top of him, Cedar Rapids put the puck into an open net. Costello was announced as the goal-scorer.

J.T. Brown tied the game for Waterloo at 7:40 of the second with a wrap-around maneuver to beat Troy Grosenick, but goals by Costello and Ben Lynch put the RoughRiders back in front, each with tallies near the midpoint. The Black Hawks got one back at 15:11 when Tyler Barnes made a hustle play behind the Cedar Rapids net to set up Derek Arnold. However, the RoughRiders reassumed a two goal lead with a quick score by Justin Kovacs off of a faceoff win at 17:12.

The third period was scoreless. The defeat sets up a match-up for Waterloo against the Des Moines Buccaneers on neutral ice at 1PM Sunday. Des Moines fell to Sioux City 7-1 Saturday in the first "Battle of Iowa" game.
