GLENDALE, Ariz. (CP) -- The Phoenix Coyotes didn't waste any time in locking up defenceman Nick Boynton.
The Coyotes signed Boynton to an $8.85 US, three-year contract Wednesday, two days after acquiring him in a trade from the Boston Bruins. The new deal will pay him $2.95 million a season, up from the $1.75 million he earned last season.
"Nick is a tough, skilled defenceman who will add a physical presence to our blue-line," said Coyotes coach and managing partner Wayne Gretzky. "He is a great addition to our solid young corps of defencemen."
A native of Nobleton, Ont., Boynton had five goals and 12 points in 54 games with Boston last season while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time.
The 27-year-old has 22 goals and 84 points in 299 NHL games -- all with the Bruins.
