(Sports Network) - A solid victory is always the best way to silence the critics and the Coyotes used this strategy on Thursday night.

Phoenix was off to a dreadful 2-8-0 start to the year and many folks began to say that it was only inevitable that Wayne Gretzky would relinquish his head coaching duties and concentrate solely on his front office position with the Coyotes. But the "Great One" apparently had other plans.

The Coyotes came into Thursday's game against visiting Edmonton with four straight loss. However Phoenix made a statement with a 6-2 victory over the Oilers, the Western Conference champions from a season ago.

Don MacLean and Owen Nolan both tallied a goal and an assist while David LeNeveu made 32 saves to lift the Coyotes.
