We need to go back to the Coliseum and support the team. Their in first place, and have a shot at the Cup this year! We have the best defence in the NHL and great young talent starting to flourish. So go back out to the Coliseum and support the Isles again.

The Isles have a good top 4, that's for sure, but after that it drops off pretty quick. Cairns can't do anything but take bad penalties and Martinek is average. Timander??? I don't know enough about him to give a fair assessment. To say they are the best defense in the NHL is a bit premature. Yashin and Czerkawski are off to good starts, but do you really believe that Czerkawski will keep up this pace the rest of the season??? Looking at some of the players on the Isles, Blake, Parrish, Peca, Scatchard, Bates, Kvasha, these guys are all good 2nd and 3rd liners, not top-line players that will carry the team all season. Dipietro is off to a good start, but he hasn't convinced nobody yet that he was worth taking ahead of Dany Heatley or Marian Gaborik.
you're changing the point ...

Whether or whether not the Isles will win the Cup is not what I was writing about; however, their attendance is what concerns me. If you don't think the Isles have a Cup contender, that's fine, but I still think you're wrong, and changing the subject. They don't draw 11,500 in Ottawa - eh? And the Sens haven't win diddilypoo yet, so let's not be so vociferous just yet about who can win it all and who cannot. I think this year with collusion and the CBA thing approaching, there are about 10 teams that can win this year, but that as I said is another story.
You opened the door on this one by saying they are a Cup contender. If the Isles are drawing the crowds you say, then if their record will be really good, the fans will come. I've been to a game at the Nassau Coliseum and it ain't pretty. The stadium is a dump, although I liked the area, it wasn't that bad. Islanders fans are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to hockey, but they aren't going to spend their money on a team that most of them don't feel is a contender in a stadium way past its prime. The Isles organization still lives in the past as much as the Oilers do!!!
This Trent Hunter has impressed me. Was watching highlights of him the other night, he took a dirty hit and left the game until the third period. Came back and scored a goal, that's what I like to see.

Czerkawski boggles my mind. I bet Montreal is just shaking their heads.

Not the best, but pretty good. Niinamaa, Aucoin (underrated), Hamrlik, and Jonnson - not bad.
This is what Atlanta did:

The Atlanta Thrashers hosted the Florida Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at Philips Arena. Game day activities for the fifth home game of the 2003-04 season included the following:

Banner Raising - In a pre-game ceremony five season ticket holders raised a banner commemorating the Thrashers fifth season in the National Hockey League.

(as a side-note) Southeastern rock group Sister Hazel performed a free concert on the ice, following the game.

The Islanders could do the same...a banner celebrating 31 years of hockey and maybe a free concert by the superstar rock group, New Post Icon.
about the defence

well I don't exactly know what "proof" I can provide, and yes of course I am biased. This is the Isles page is it not? However, if you look at defence rosters throughout the league I think you will be hard pressed to find a better set of defencemen. Regardless, we did have 13,000 there Thurs. night which is still not incredible, but could be worse. I guess I was gearing my post toward my Islander compatriots, but most of the viewers are Canadian (big surprise there!) :p lol - Perhaps attendance will pickup, Wang will decide not to dump anymore salary, and I can live in peace until the playoffs.

PS - Oh yeah, to credit where credit is due, Wang has fixed up the Coliseum within the last 18 months, and it looks a hell of a lot better, and don't make your freakin' trip here, we dont wantcha! :!: >>&: ***

Better set of Defense, hmm that's pretty easy. How bout the Avs??? Come on, the Islanders are a mediocre team at best. They might make the playoffs, but they don't make it past the first round

How have they changed it? Is it those weird ads in the boards that are a video screen, that flicker all the time and are practically impossible to read? The place looks the same if you ask me. And if you want a rink that looks good on TV. Have the Camera at centre ice, not on the blue line. It just looks really dumb, and its way too far down ice. Maybe its those LED ribbon boards at each end of the rink, and are in the middle of nowhere. Face it, the place is the worst in the League, except for Phoenix, but they are moving next month.

The place looks the same as it did a few years ago.

New York Islanders defence-Hamrlik, Aucoin, Niinimaa, Jonsson, Martinek, Timander and Cairns

The top 4 are good, but after that, its get's really sad. Laviolette couldn't even let them play more 2-3 minutes a game in the playoffs last year because they were so useless. Niinimaa and Jonsson leave so much to be desired for its not even funny. Colorado, Ottawa, Detroit, New Jersey and Dallas all have much deeper defense cores then the Isles!!!

ya they are pretty good that i think about it...not the best...but good...and i think Aucoin isn't underrated....i think he's reted perfectly....87 overall is pretty good...you think underrated?
From what I gather, this is an entire list of the Islanders defensive core, prospects and what not.

1. Aucoin
2. Hamrlik
3. Jonsson
4. Niinimaa
5. Martinek
6. Cairns
7. Timander
8. Butenschon
9. Smith
10. Pettinen

Aucoin logs icetime.
Hamrlik is key for their Powerplay, why not Niinamaa?
Jonsson is overrated.
Martinek who?
Cairns, give me a break.
Timander who?
