Newbury misses All-Star Game

Don Cherry, star of Hockey Night In Canada's Coach's Corner, was the keynote speaker at Monday's AHL All-Star Classic luncheon in Toronto.

"I spent about 2,000 years in the AHL," Cherry said. "I owe everything to the AHL. It got me to the NHL."

AHL president Dave Andrews presented Cherry with a Rochester Americans' throwback jersey.

Also honoured was Hockey Hall of Famer Andy Bathgate before Monday's game and he remembered his own experience at All-Star Games.

"You didn't associate with the other players back then," Bathgate said.

"You'd get to the All-Star Game and Ted Lindsay would walk by and grunt," Bathgate said. "That's the only words you'd get out of him."

Bathgate paused, though, to send his best wishes to a former hated opponent, LaSalle's John Ferguson Sr., who is battling cancer and attended Monday's luncheon.

"I played against him for eight years and we never said a word to each other," Bathgate said.

"I thought he was the ugliest guy I knew, but he came to play every night. It's good to see him looking well. I hope the best for him."
