NHL captains come in all shapes, sizes and personalities.

Mark Messier, whose glare was legendary, was an intimidating presence on the ice, and vocal in the locker room and with the media while captain of the New York Rangers.

Wayne Gretzky, hardly an imposing physical specimen, was relatively soft spoken, but he said his peace when necessary and showed that actions can mean more by scoring 92 goals one season and more than 200 points four times while playing for the Edmonton Oilers.

Teams in other sports recently began naming captains, but the position has always been more important in hockey; wearing the "C" on the front of a jersey is a tremendous honor, one that is never taken lightly.
