(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers try to build another winning streak tonight when they welcome the Washington Capitals to Philips Arena.
Atlanta had a three-game winning streak ended in Friday's loss to Carolina, but bounced back the next night with a 4-3 overtime win against the Capitals. Ilya Kovalchuk's first goal of the season came 3:02 into OT and lifted Atlanta to the road win.
Scott Mellanby added a pair of goals for the Thrashers, while goaltender Kari Lehtonen stopped 35-of-38 shots faced in the win.
Atlanta, which is after its first-ever playoff berth, is the early Southeast Division leader with nine points -- two ahead of Carolina and Florida.
Kovalchuk, who netted 52 tallies last year, had never gone five games into a season before scoring his first goal. Overall, he is tied for fourth on the club with five points.
Marian Hossa also scored on Saturday and is tops on the team with eight points. Hossa is also tied with Jon Sim for the club high with five goals.
Atlanta will host Florida on Saturday.
Washington, meanwhile, ended a two-game slide on Wednesday, using a five-goal first period towards a 5-2 win over the visiting Panthers. Alexander Semin had a goal and an assist to lead the effort.
