(Sports Network) - A pair of struggling clubs meet this evening in the nation's capital, as the Washington Capitals welcome the Los Angeles Kings to the Verizon Center.

The Capitals are 3-8-1 in their last 12 games and are coming off Tuesday's shootout loss to Boston. Phil Kessel scored the deciding goal in the final segment to help the Bruins grind out the 3-2 victory at the Verizon Center.

Brooks Laich and Eric Fehr each scored in regulation for the Capitals, who have dropped four of their last five contests. Alexander Semin scored in the shootout for Washington, which got 22 saves from Olaf Kolzig.

Washington phenom Alexander Ovechkin has 70 points on the season, the third- highest total in the league, but has been held off the scoresheet in three straight contests.

The Capitals, who are 13-11-4 as the host this season, are playing the third test of a four-game homestand tonight.

Washington has 52 points and is nine behind Carolina for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
