VANCOUVER (CP) - Mattias Ohlund scored Vancouver's second power-play goal of the game Saturday as the Canucks won for the third straight time this season, defeating the Minnesota Wild 2-1.
Ohlund scored his third goal in as many games from the top of the face-off circle 10 seconds after Wild defenceman Martin Skoula was penalized for tripping Trevor Linden.
Henrik Sedin won the offensive zone draw and the Canucks quickly worked the puck to Ohlund who beat rookie goaltender Niklas Backstrom.
Linden opened the scoring for Vancouver, while Pavol Demitra replied for the Wild.
Canuck netminder Roberto Luongo backstopped the victory with a 28-save effort, including a brilliant third-period robbery of Wes Walz when he got a glove on his break-in shot.
Vancouver improved to 17-15-1 with the key win over a rival in the tightly packed Northwest Division, where they are only 4-8-1.
The Wild lost their seventh straight road game to fall to 16-14-2. The Wild had several chances to take a lead into the third period but had to settle for Demitra's 1-1 goal early in the middle frame when they outshot the Canucks 16-6.
He stepped over the Vancouver blue-line and unleashed a 60-foot shot that appeared to dip and handcuff Luongo.
Later in the period, Pascal Dupuis tried to convert Walz's rebound but the puck caromed off Henrik Sedin, then hit the Vancouver goalie's mask as he fell back in the net.
