man I love this upgrade.   :beer

Sorry was to busy laughing to post my opinion.

If people said firing Nonis was a step ahead for the canucks, hiring Gillis was 4 steps back. Gillis is the kind of guy you hire as a assistant GM so he can learn the workings of an NHL team behind an exp GM, not putting him @ the top when he knows nothing about this side of the business. Atleast thats what I think anyway.

i would have hired gillis as an assistant gm so that he can get a hang on everything that he needs to know. Although he could prove me wrong and do a great job and sign some pretty good players.

True but I would rather take that chance with somebody who's got some exp then somebody with none al'a JP ricardi or JFJ.
I don't think this is necessarily a bad move at all. Gillis is a VERY sharp cookie. He has a huge amount of experience at contract negotiation, and is a former player (that means a lot to some folk, though not me) so folks can't compain about him not being a "hockey man". Who knows what he said in conversation with Acquilini that left him as impressed as you are amused?

If anything leaves me with some doubt, it's the speed at which the Canucks settled on Gillis. This is an extremely fast hiring after a firing, and makes me wonder why the would do it quite this soon...

For some reason I'm thinking Acquilini was looking for a yes man, there was a lot of rumors going around that Acquilini was telling Nonis to make the trade for Richards @ the deadline and he said "no".
