Equipment Manager Gus Thorson is in his 10th year as the Flames Equipment Manager following decorated 10-year career with the Canadian National Hockey Team. He began his tenure with the national program in 1989 with the under-18 program while also assisting with the national team under the title of Assistant Trainer. His last five years with the national team, Gus held the position of Head Equipment Manager. He has attended six World Championships tournaments capturing a Gold medal in 1997, and also attended the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.
As the man in charge of all equipment and supplies for the Flames and their affiliated players, Thorson will outfit more than 60 players. During the season, his responsibilities will include skate sharpening, maintaining inventory, repairing equipment and coordinating the transfer of the team's equipment to other NHL cities.
Gus has worked in the hockey business at various levels for more than 20 years. Before joining the National Team, the 48-year old, worked as a trainer with the University of Calgary and in major junior hockey with the Victoria Cougars, Moose Jaw Warriors and Calgary Wranglers. Although a native of Sackville, New Brunswick, Gus has called Calgary home since 1970.
