MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's ice hockey federation appointed CSKA Moscow's Vyacheslav Bykov on Friday to coach the national team.

Bykov replaces Vladimir Krikunov, who resigned after Russia failed to make the semifinals at the world championship in May.

Russia has not won the world championship since 1993 and hosts next year's event.

Bykov, formerly a star forward for Traktor Chelyabinsk and CSKA Moscow, will be Russia's 14th coach since 1992.

Bykov, who has coached CSKA since 2004, played 99 times and scored 49 goals for the Soviet Union and Russia. He is a two-time Olympic and five-time world champion.
