(Sports Network) - The Chicago Blackhawks will attempt to avoid their longest losing streak in 56 years when they take on the Calgary Flames in a Sunday afternoon tilt from the United Center.
Chicago has lost 10 consecutive games since opening the new calendar year with a 4-1 victory at St. Louis on January 2. Another setback would give the franchise its longest losing spell since the Blackhawks ended the 1950-51 campaign with 12 straight defeats.
The Blackhawks did have a 14-game winless stretch (12 losses, 2 ties) from November 9-December 7, 2003 and dropped 10 in a row from December 18-January 8 of last season.
Chicago's latest disappointment came on Friday, when Nashville completed a home-and-home sweep of the Blackhawks with a 3-1 triumph at the United Center. The Predators' Vernon Fiddler scored the deciding goal with 2:21 left in the third period.
Brent Seabrook scored the lone Chicago goal and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 28- of-30 shots in another losing cause.
Friday's defeat was the eighth straight at home for the Blackhawks, who own a 10-13-3 record in the Windy City this season. Chicago's last victory at the United Center was a 2-1 decision over Dallas on December 26.
This will be the Blackhawks' last opportunity for a home victory in quite a while. Following this afternoon's matchup, the club will embark on a season- long seven-game road trip beginning Thursday in Los Angeles.
