(Sports Network) - The Chicago Blackhawks play their first game under new head coach Denis Savard tonight when they host the Dallas Stars at the United Center.

General manager Dale Tallon announced Monday that Savard would replace the fired Trent Yawney with the hope that the latter man can turn things around after a 7-12-2 start. The Blackhawks have the second-worst record in the Western Conference, sitting ahead of only Columbus.

Savard, who played 881 of his 1,196 NHL games with the Blackhawks and has his No. 18 retired by the club, has been on the team's coaching staff since 1997.

The Blackhawks are coming off a 1-3-1 road trip that finished with three regulation losses in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. In those games combined the team scored only three goals.

The trip ended with last Friday's 5-1 loss in Edmonton, as Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots to stymie the Blackhawks and anchor the Oilers.

Mikael Holmqvist scored the lone goal for the Blackhawks, while Brian Boucher was pulled after the first period after allowing three goals on seven shots. Nikolai Khabibulin finished the match and made 15 saves on 17 shots.

Chicago will host St. Louis on Friday.
