There were just too many substantial contracts on the Blackhawks' books. Someone had to be moved sooner or later, and no one filled the bill better than defenseman Cam Barker.

Barker, whom the Hawks selected with the third overall pick in the 2004 NHL draft, was traded Friday to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defensemen Kim Johnsson and Nick Leddy. The teams were able to finalize the deal before a roster freeze, which ends Feb. 28, went into effect for the Winter Olympics.

The move - which came a day after Hawks coach Joel Quenneville discussed using Barker more on the power play - maintains the team's depth on defense, while giving it a little more experience. Most important, it frees up cap space for the future.
