(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks will attempt to clinch the Northwest Division title on home ice tonight against a Colorado Avalanche squad fighting for its playoff lives.

Vancouver enters this key divisional showdown with a three-point lead on second-place Minnesota and three regular-season games remaining. A victory over the Avalanche this evening would secure the Canucks their second Northwest crown in three years.

It would also eliminate Colorado, which trails Calgary by five points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, from postseason consideration. The Avalanche could remain alive with an overtime or shootout loss tonight, but only if the Flames lose to San Jose on Thursday.

The Canucks' final two tests will come on the road. The club visits San Jose on Saturday before wrapping up the regular season Sunday in Phoenix.

Vancouver got closer to wrapping up the division after downing the hapless Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. The Canucks fought back from an early two-goal deficit with three second-period goals, then added a late empty-netter to come away with a 4-2 win.
