(Sports Network) - Entering this season many in Washington were waiting to see what sophomore superstar Alexander Ovechkin would do next. While Ovechkin has a very respectable four goals and three assists in the first seven games, he is being overshadowed on his club's stat sheet.

Alexander Semin spent the past two seasons playing in Russia to fulfill his military obligations. This was a problem for the Capitals, who legally tried to make Semin return to North American to honor his contract.

All may be forgotten, however, if he continues to produce the way he is in the early going.

In the first seven games, Semin is tied for third in the NHL with eight goals -- two behind co-leaders Chris Drury and Marian Hossa. His 11 points overall lead the Caps -- three more than Chris Clark and four more than Ovechkin.

Semin has also been a key contributor to the Washington power play, accounting for four of the team's seven goals with the man-advantage.

As a team the Caps have lost two straight and four of their last five games. On Saturday they dropped a 6-4 tilt to visiting Tampa Bay, as Nikita Alexeev scored a pair of goals to lift the Lightning.
