The United States won its first game of the 2007 World Junior Hockey Championship on Saturday by defeating the struggling Slovaks 6-1.

The loss puts Slovakia in the relegation round for the third consecutive year, while the Americans can advance to the quarterfinals with a win over the host Swedes on Sunday.

London Knights forward Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists while defenceman Erik Johnson had two points and Nathan Gerbe added three assists.

Juraj Mikus scored for Slovakia.
