CWUAA news: [Derek Ryan to NHL] : [All-Stars]

This was a rare event. The Evil Monkeys were outshot! The Banjomutts outshot the Apes 34-28 and Jordon Cooke stopped everything he faced. The Mutts scored power-play, even strength, penalty shot, and empty net goals. And had four different scorers. This ended a 6-game winning streak for the Monkeys. Too many people had the Monkeys pencilled-in as champions, after having swept aside the Mutts a couple weeks ago. However, the Monkeys are missing something this year. They would still be favoured against any team other than UNB at the nationals. But they are not invincible.

The news links are worth a look. Former Monkey Derek Ryan has made it to the NHL. And this year's all-stars were announced. Included were Bisons Jordan DePape (1st team forward), Adam Henry (rookie defence), and Brett Stovin (rookie forward). It is noteworthy that five 5th year Monkeys were selected to either the 1st or 2nd teams. The Bisons would have liked to see Shaq Merasty picked. Here are the complete selections:

First All-Star Team
Name / Position / University / Year / Hometown
Jordon Cooke / G / Sask / 2nd / Leduc, AB
Jordan Rowley / D / Alberta / 5th / Edmonton, AB
Kendall McFaull / D / Sask / 3rd / Rosetown, SK
Tyler Fiddler / F / MRU / 5th / Prince Albert, SK
Jordan DePape / F / Manitoba / 3rd / Winnipeg, MB
Kruise Reddick / F / Alberta / 5th / Manor, SK

Second All-Star Team
Name / Position / University / Year / Hometown
Matt Hewitt / G / UBC / 3rd / New Westminster, BC
Thomas Carr / D / Alberta / 5th / Edmonton, AB
Jordan Fransoo / D / Sask / 2nd / North Battleford, SK
Elgin Pearce / F / Calgary / 3rd / Port Coquitlam, BC
Jordan Hickmott / F / Alberta / 5th / Mission, BC
Levko Koper / F / Alberta / 5th / Edmonton, AB

All-Rookie Team
Name / Position / University / Hometown
Colin Cooper / G / MRU / Calgary, AB
Adam Henry / D / Manitoba / Winnipeg, MB
Jordan McNaughton / D / MRU / Komoka, ON
Kohl Bauml / F / Sask / Saskatoon, SK
Brett Stovin / F / Manitoba / Stony Mountain, MB
Levi Cable / F / Sask / Hudson Bay, SK

OUT EAST

CARLETON RAVENS 1

(UQTR leads series 1-0)

This game went Wednesday night. UQTR has been the class of the OUA this year and after facing two mediocre opponents they now face a tougher test. IMO Cartoon U is not a contender but is at least competitive with .500 teams from the CWUAA or AUS. The Pats scored shorthanded, even strength, power play, and empty net goals. Game 2 goes Saturday.

GUELPH GRYPHONS 1
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 2
(UWO leads series 1-0)

Links:
:. [OUA Boxscore]

This series started on Thursday. The Urban Cowboys took Game 1 despite the best efforts of the Goof goaltender, Andrew D'Agostini, who stopped 40 of 42 shots. One of these teams will qualify for the nationals, despite not having beaten a Top 20 team in the playoffs.

NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 4
U.P.E.I. PANTHERS 0
(UNB wins series 3-0)

Links:
:. [AUS Boxscore]

This one was played on Monday. The Squirrels have been on a roll since Christmas. 17-0-0 now. The Black Cats never stood a chance.

Monday
ST. F.X. X-MEN 0
SAINT MARY'S HUSKIES 4
(SFX leads series 2-1)

Wednesday

ST. F.X. X-MEN 4
SAINT MARY'S HUSKIES 3
(SFX wins series 3-1)

Moving to home ice helped the SMUskies stave off a sweep. However, it must sting to blow a 3-0 lead, which is what they did in Game 4. The Jeremies thus move to the final and secure a berth in the nationals. The SMUskies qualify as hosts, and UPEI is officially toast.

After back-to-back road series victories, could the Bison Broads pull of a third? I figure this will go to overtime in game 3, just like their other series.

The conference Final 4 is being played in Alberta and the lower seeds won both games. So on Saturday the Bisons will play the Monkeys for bronze and a berth in the nationals. The Mutts will face Trinity Western for the gold and both of those teams are on their way to the nationals.

Manitoba basketball has been in the crapper for many years. But that may be changing. The Bisons have become a strong team, and Winnipeg had a very close series against Regina last weekend. In other series, Calgary leads Alberta 1-0, UBC beat Lethbridge 2-0, and Regina and Thompson Rivers are tied 1-1. The four winners play a Final 4 tournament next weekend.

Mar 5: Mutts sweep Monkeys

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2

(Sask wins series 2-0)

LeagueStat: [Summary]

The rookie-laden Mutts completed an unlikely run to a Canada West title with a convincing sweep of the veteran-laden 2-time defending national champs. What makes these results rare is that Alberta was outshot, albeit just by 31-28.

Both sides now advance to the nationals. Sask has to be seeded in the top 3, and Alberta will likely be seeded 5th, barring an upset loss by UNB.

OUT EAST

CARLETON RAVENS 3
(UQTR wins series 2-0)

:. [OUA Boxscore]

The Pats have shredded the OUA so far. After losing to Queen's on January 8th, they have won 19 straight games. They are 6-0 in the playoffs. However, since a Quebec team cannot host the Queen's Cup, they will be the away team next Saturday in the conference final.

WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 1
GUELPH GRYPHONS 3
(series tied 1-1)

Links:
:. [OUA Boxscore]

It is fitting that this series is going the distance. Both sides are mediocre bit have periodically teased with possibilities of better-than-averageness. After Sunday's game 3, one of these teams will host UQTR in the Qieen's Cup and be assured of no worse than a 4th seed at nationals. The other will have to win a road game at Carleton to become the 8th seed at the nationals. Pretty strange.

FWIW, the Urban Cowboys lost to UQTR 5-2 and to Carleton 4-3. Goof U lost to UQTR 2-0 but beat Carleton 2-0.

Once again, the Bison Broads are going to Game 3 on the road. Can they do it again? I watched at CanadaWest.tv and they did dominate the Birdies. Shots were 27-18. Only the winner will advance to nationals.

This was not a shock, unlike the dual upsets on Friday. Trinity beat Sask 3-1 for gold. So no nationals for the volleyball team.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Bisons wrapped up their series last weekend. On Saturday Calgary completed their sweep of Alberta and Thompson Rivers won the rubber match against Regina. If I have the seedings correct, the Bisons will face Calgary and Thompson Rivers will face UBC in next weekend's Final Four tournament.

Mar 6-9: Eastern Playoffs Continue

OUT EAST

GUELPH GRYPHONS 1
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 5
(UWO wins series 2-1)

Links:
:. [OUA Boxscore]

This one was played on Sunday night. In the end the Urban Cowboys claim another OUAW title and are thus assured of nothing worse than a #4 seeding in the Univeristy Cup. Even though they were ranked only #19 after the regular season and the teams they beat were #25 Laurier, #29 Toronto, and #22 Guelph. They also get a break in that the Queen's Cup (the OUA conference championship) must be held in Ontario. So they will host UQTR on Saturday. Goof U must travel to play Cartoon U in a bronze playoff for the final berth in the University Cup.

UNB's incredible hot streak comes to an end. Due to the CIS seeding process, they cannot be seeded higher than 5th at the University Cup. So they will be playing the loser of the Queen's Cup game in the opening round.

What about The Jeremies? They were #4 in the OHT36 at the end of the regular season and have beaten #7 and #1 in the playoffs.

The Bison Broads almost pulled off the improbable 3 consecutive road series wins needed to make the nationals. As it is, 5 road wins must be some kind of record.

March 17-19: University Cup

QUARTER-FINALS

CARLETON RAVENS 2
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 3
(in overtime)

Links:

Thursday afternoon's opener took over 116 minutes to decide a winner. That pushed the evening game back. In the end the Banjo Mutts won as expected over Cartoon U.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2
ST. F.X. X-MEN 6

Links:

:. [OUA Leaguestat]

Typical game for the Monkeys this year. Outshoot the opponent by a wide margin (43-28) but lose. The Monkeys had a 2-0 lead but the Jeremies rallied.

NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 5
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 1

Links:

:. [OUA Leaguestat]

The Friday matinee was an easy win for the heavily favoured Squirrels. IMO the Urban Cowboys were lucky to be here. They were only #19 in the OHT36 and never had to be beat a higher ranked team to qualify.

SAINT MARY'S HUSKIES 3
U.Q.T.R. PATRIOTES 2

Links:

:. [OUA Leaguestat]

The SMUskies were plagued by injuries and written off by many. But the AUS is a strong conference and they were 3rd. UQTR's lofty record may have been misleading.

SEMI-FINALS

ST. F.X. X-MEN 2
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 1
(in overtime)

Links:

:. [OUA Leaguestat]

The Mutts could ill afford another 116 minute game. So they lost after 107 minutes. That's 223 minutes of hockey woth one game left. IMO the CW and AUS champions should be on opposite sides of the draw.

SAINT MARY'S HUSKIES 0
NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 4

Links:

:. [OUA Leaguestat]

The Squirrels easily disted off the SMUskies. After a loss to SFX in conference playoffs they seem to be back to their #1 form.

BRONZE FINAL

The Saskies had nothing left for this one after two mega-overtime games. Bronze games can be funny. Sometimes intense and sometimes a bit of a drag. IMO the SMUskies just had more gas in the tank for this one.

GOLD FINAL

I was not able to watch live due to my son's playoff series, which he won! IAE I have the impression that UNB got back to form and that the rest of the teams were good but not great this year. I can see where UNB is vulnerable. They were not as strong as last year's Apes.

My overall impression of the tournament was that the only team which did not belong was the Western Ontario Urban Cowboys. But somebody from the OUA West had to be there.
