EVIL MONKEYS DEMOLISH DINOS

CALGARY DINOS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 8

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [C.W. RECAP] ~ [U OF A STORY] ~ [U OF C STORY]

I saw some of this on-line while watching the Leafs take another step towards the Stanley Cup on TV. Calgary sucked. Are they suffering from being happy to get this far?

Alberta outshot Calgary 18-5 in the 1st period but were only up 2-1. Rather than take satisfaction that they dodged a bullet and pick themselves up for the 2nd, instead Calgary fell apart. Alberta racked up 5 unanswered goals in the 2nd. Calgary started their back-up goaltender Kris Lazaruk before yanking him after giving up 4 goals.

Alberta is looking stronger as the season progresses. However, it also seems clear that Manitoba was their toughest opponent.

AUS Final (best-of-five)

UNB Varsity Reds v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: March 11: St. F-X 2 UNB 3
Game 2: March 12: St. F-X 2 UNB 1 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]
Game 3: March 15: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 4: March 16: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 5: TBD

Queen's Cup (one game)

McGill Redmen v Western Ontario Mustangs
Game 1: March 12: McGill 6 W. Ontario 2 : [BOXSCORE]

The three conference winners will be seeded 1, 2, and 3 for the nationals. And since there are 2 teams per conference there will be one team from each conference in each pool.

Therefore, I believe that the pools will be like this if UNB beats StFX:
A: UNB, Calgary, W. Ontario
B: McGill, Alberta, St. FX

But, if St FX beats UNB I bet they'll look like this:
A: McGill, UNB, Calgary
B: Alberta, St. FX, W. Ontario

BISON BROADS LOSE, PLAY FOR 5TH

Saturday Games

Manitoba Bisons 3
St. Francis-Xavier X-Women 4

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

After a bad game on Friday the Bison Broads had only an outside chance to advance even with a win. The reason was hat if all sides had a 1-1 record, that 4-0 loss would kill them in the +/-. IMO, they still overachieved by winning the CW and getting to nationals ahead of Sask and Calgary. And, is it just me or does the nickname "X-Women" conjure an image of a woman wearing nothing but a lacy thong and high heels?

McGill Martlets 3
Queen's Golden Gaels 1

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

This was a closely contested pool and McGill will play for gold, as expected, and Queen's will play for bronze.

Sunday Games

11:00 CT
Manitoba Bisons v Alberta Pandas

3:00 CT
Laurier Golden Hawks v Queen's Golden Gaels

UPDATE

WOMEN'S NATIONALS

Manitoba Bisons 2
Alberta Pandas 5

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

It is kind of odd that they have a 5th place game in the women's nationals and don't even play a 3rd place in men's. Anyhow, the Bison Broads are probably happy they even made nationals this year.

Laurier Golden Hawks 0
Queen's Golden Gaels 1

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

Queen's got the bronze with this one. Which makes sense since they beat Laurier in the OUA playoffs.

St. Francis-Xavier X-Women 2
McGill Martlets 5

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

McGill went unbeaten and one must say are deserving of a national title. It seems that after them the next 7 or 8 teams in the CIS are of relatively equal strength but McGill are clearly #1 in broad hockey.

AUS Final (best-of-five)

UNB Varsity Reds v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: March 11: St. F-X 2 UNB 3 : [BOXSCORE]
Game 2: March 12: St. F-X 2 UNB 1 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]
Game 3: March 15: UNB 2 St. F-X 0 : [BOXSCORE]
Game 4: March 16: UNB 3 St. F-X 6 : [BOXSCORE] : [RECAP]
Game 5: March 18: St. F-X 4 UNB 5 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]

So #1 ranked UNB gets a real scare by their nemesis from St. F-X. This means that UNB will get the #1 seed and be in one pool whilst McGill and Alberta are in the other pool. Since St. FX must be in an opposite pool, they will be in with Alberta and McGill whilst Calgary and the Urban Cowboys will join the Squirrels.

I'll be interested to see how the schedule will work for the nationals. UNB will likely play Thursday and crush either Calgary or W-Ontario, leaving the loser disheartened and basically eliminated heading into Friday's game.

St. FX reminds me of the Bisons. And the Bisons have been able to play the Evil Monkeys dead even the last 3 years. Everybody will also want to see how McGill stacks up after dominating the OUA all year.

CLOSE BATTLES ON DAY 1

ST. FRANCIS-XAVIER X-MEN 1
MCGILL REDMEN 2

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

This was the afternoon game so I was unable to watch. St. FX had beaten McGill in OT in a non-conference game earlier this year so it figured to be a tight one. McGill dominated the OUA-E this year and St. FX was considered a rising star due to their win over SMU and tight loss to UNB in the AUS playoffs.

St. FX now plays the Evil Monkeys on Friday afternoon whilst the McGilligutties will face them on Saturday. This always figured to be the "Pool of Death" and I find it hard to make one side a big favourite.

CALGARY DINOS 1
NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 2

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

I saw this one on-line from mid-1st period onwards. Calgary was unlucky to lose. The Squirrels scored with only 4 seconds left from a face-off.

Calgary now faces the Urban Cowboys on Friday night. Like St FX, they must win and then hope that the team they beat can come back and win the next day, then hope to win the pool on +/-.

DINOS, MONKEYS LOSE SQUEAKERS

Before going into the nationals, I should mention that Bison d-man Jeremy Schappert won a pair of awards. First, he won CW rookie (freshman) of the year. Then before the nationals started he was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team. Hopefully he will have several more seasons. The Bison blue-line may well return intact in 2011-12.

ST. FRANCIS-XAVIER X-MEN 3
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 1

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

This result throws the pool into a bit of disarray heading into Saturday afternoon's finale. McGill is 1-0 (+1), SFX 1-1 (+1), and the Monkeys 0-1 (-2). So, if McGill beats Alberta they will go to the final. But if Alberta wins by 1 or 2 goals, SFX goes to the final. If Alberta win by 4 or more then they go to the final. But if Alberta wins 3-0 I think they have to have a shoot-out with SFX. Ugh.

This pool was expected to be a toss-up and this is proving true. The fact that Alberta could not get a second goal is costly. SFX took the 3-1 lead early in the 3rd and then shut 'er down. IMO, SFX looks very similar to the Bisons.

CALGARY DINOS 2
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 3

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

I know that Calgary would have telling themselves that with a win they could hold out hope that the Urban Cowboys would upset the Squirrels and land themselves a berth in the final. But really? This has been an evenly matched tournament thus far but if any game is going to change that it will be Saturday night's round-robin finale. I see that UWO had only 4 shots in the 3rd period. Yikes. Too bad for the Dinos. Had they beaten UNB I believe that they would have been on their way to the final.

MEDIA REVIEW:

Of course, start with the sources that cover the CIS all year, namely The CIS Blog, where they have live blogs during each game. (Which is nice when you are watching on SportsNet!) They also have a Day 1 Recap. They also have loads of links to other media stories.

And, South Campus Sports has a story about the 0-2 start after Alberta's loss.

Here's a summary of the stories from other media that you can check out:

SQUIRRELS AND MCGILLIGUTTIES MAKE IT AN ALL-RED FINAL

CHAMPIONSHIP SITE
SSN CANADA - ONLINE WEBCASTS

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3
MCGILL REDMEN 6

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

Since Alberta lost their first game by 2 goals, this game had a surreal feel about it. Alberta had to win by 4 or more goals to advance. If they won 3-0 then they would have had a shoot-out with St. FX. Any other win would send St. FX through. And, of course, McGill's win sent them through. Please, CIS. add two more teams to the field and make this a straight knockout!

Mo-oo-oo-cha also lost his touch. He was incredible against Calgary and Manitoba in the CW playoffs but was a bit of a sieve in this one.

Anyhow, after being around for 135 years, McGill was due to make a first appearance in the final.

NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 4
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 0

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

UNB made this one look easy. For some reason, the teams were lippy in the pre-game. Whatever. At least this one was easy: winner advances, loser out. To me it was just a matter of time before the Urban Cowboys fell apart. Their only pressure came on the PP. And what was with all those calls? I suspect that there was the odd dive thrown in there as well, mostly from UWO.

SQUIRRELS WHIP MCGILLIGUTTIES

MCGILL REDMEN 0
NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 4

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

McGill did well to make it this far. However, my view of the match-up was that in 100 games they would still have a hard time beating UNB. They were smaller and on any rush got one shot and that was it. No sustained pressure, no ability to force the play, no real threat to score. So UNB hosts this again next year. (I hate that.)
