Default Parise to have knee surgery

The injury bug continues to haunt the New Jersey Devils.

Already mired in last place in the Atlantic Division thanks to a 3-8-1 start, the Devils announced Monday that forward Zach Parise will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery after suffering an injury to his right knee during Saturday's 3-1 loss at Los Angeles.

Parise, 26, has never appeared in fewer than 81 games in a season since he joined the Devils in the fall of 2005. He has 341 points (163 goals, 178 assists) in 419 NHL games. No timetable has been set for Parise's return.

The Devils also learned Monday that center Jacob Josefson will miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a detached ligament in his hand. Josefson, a 19-year-old rookie, was held without a point in his first six NHL games. He was New Jersey's first-round pick (No. 20) at the 2009 Entry Draft.

Besides Parise and Josefson, the Devils are also without defensemen Anssi Salmela (torn ACL), Bryce Salvador (concussion) and Matthew Corrente, who broke his hand during a fight in San Jose last Wednesday.

Take all the time you need to recover Zach, it doesn't look like this team is going anywhere this year anyway. We're 13 games into the season now and the Devils have a whopping 7 points in the standings, a goal differential of -21, and no sign of turning it around.

They're a complete mess right now. I'd love to say that they'll turn it around, but I'm seriously having doubts they will. Of course it doesn't help to have all the injuries they've had (Salmela, Salvador, Rolston, Corrente, Josefson, Volchenkov, Parise) and to have half a rookie defense.

The thing that bothers me is the play of the veterans. Elias is completely nonexistent. Langenbrunner has had his head up his ass since after the Olympics last year. Arnott hasn't made much of an impact (although he hasn't been terrible). Tallinder has looked completely lost. Brodeur has looked like a 38 year old goaltender. Even when Parise was in the lineup, he wasn't the same Parise he's been in years past.

There's just not enough pride, not enough passion, and not enough fire in this team right now. Clarkson, who is supposed to be a sandpaper type guy has looked more like Charmin toilet paper. Nobody wants to go to the net or win puck battles on the boards. The defense can't move the puck in transition to save their lives (Taormina in about the only one who is any good at it). They leave guys open and let them get in Brodeur's face all the time. I can't say there's anything they do well. Offense, defense, special teams, goaltending, they've all been average to downright terrible. It's honestly just painful to watch.

It's going to be a long, long season...

Dam, Parise is a good 2 way forward that they could use right now, especially where their at in the standings.

Add another chapter to the horror story that is the 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils. I don't even want to know what's next.

Just to show how truly bad the Devils season has been...

Parise (torn meniscus)
Rolston (hernia)
Salvador (concussion)
Volchenkov (broken nose, whiplash/concussion)
Corrente (broken hand)
Salmela (torn ACL)
Fraser (broken hand)
Josefson (detached hand ligament)

8 players, including 5 defensemen currently injured. Their top four on defense right now consists of Tallinder, White, Greene, and Taormina. Scary bunch, huh?

On the bright side, the Devils don't have to worry about not dressing a full roster.
