Random Thoughts/Opinions:

It's no secret that I like our prospect pool - I think it's pretty balanced and has a good mix of players with top end talent and work ethic. However, one glaring weakness that I think exists is in net.

McCollum's struggled in his adjustment to professional hockey, and his play is still erratic in Toledo. I hope he's able to put it together and get back to the level of play he was at when he was highly touted, but right now he's looking like he struggles to put goals behind him. Pearce was solid at the AHL level last year, but wasn't a stand-out. This year, he can be described as shaky at best. Might have something to do with the loss of Meech (who was one of the best defensemen on the Griffins last year) and Kolosov, as well as the AHL upholding Smith's NHL suspension at the start of the season. I've got high hopes for Mrazek and come away impressed whenever I've seen him play, but I'm also not a fan of putting all our eggs into one basket. He doesn't have the physical tools that McCollum has, but I think his mental game is better.

With all that said, I'd like to see the Red Wings add at least two goaltender prospects - either through drafting or signing a free agent. Possible free agents I would target are as below.

  • Joacim Eriksson, 21, Skellefteå (Elitserien). Was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, but they allowed their rights expire prior to the draft last year, which allowed Eriksson to re-enter the draft. Since he wasn't drafted again, he's eligible to become a free agent. He's easily been the best goaltender in Sweden this year.
  • Christian Engstrand, 23, Linköping (Elitserien). Stuck in a backup role in Linköping behind Fredrik Norrena. Very consistent netminder with few weaknesses. Has good confidence, attitude and is very calm in net. Love his mental make-up.
  • Ramis Sadikov, 20, Erie (OHL). Was an invite to the Red Wings development camp. Huge frame and stepped into the starting role in Erie as soon as they resolved the issue with having too many import players.

Update on Hudon and why he's left Cornell - related to OCD.

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/juniorhockey/blog/buzzing_the_net/post/QMJHL-Red-Wings-pick-says-battle-with-OCD-led-h?urn=juniorhockey-wp3676

Philippe Hudon is not the first college hockey player to leave his team before even completing his semester, but his explanation kind of jumps out.
The Detroit Red Wings fifth-round choice, who played at a U.S. prep school for two years rather than play major junior, recently took what was called a personal leave from Cornell University. The forward skated Tuesday with the QMJHL's Victoriaville Tigres, telling the media that the reason he left Cornell was due to complications of coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Here is the quote, via Benoît Plamondon:

"Depuis un mois, j'ai pris un recul en raison de ce qu'on appelle le TOC, soit le trouble obsessionnel compulsif. J'ai été diagnostiqué l'an passé.

Here's a rough translation from Google Translate:

"For a month, I took a step backwards because of the so-called OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder. I was diagnosed last year. It was a battle for me during the past year. I had difficulty in managing the school, trouble and hockey. It was jeopardizing my eligibility to continue my journey in the ranks of American academics. So I decided to come home. I took an intensive therapy to try to heal as quickly as possible since I still want to pursue my ultimate dream of a career in hockey. I had to put things into perspective and analyze all options available to me. That's why I trained with the Tigres today."

While the term obsessive-compulsive gets tossed around casually, it can be a pretty serious matter. Young athletes are particularly susceptible to it. Canadian diver Kelly MacDonald missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics after her OCD left her unable to compete.

In MacDonald's case, what began as a brief series of actions to gain composure — clearing her throat, tapping her leg and blinking at certain steps on her approach — eventually left her stuck on the diving board, unable to calm down. "One by one, her dives went to pieces," says Saul Marks, a psychiatrist at North York General Hospital in Toronto, and a member of Diving Plongeon Canada's governing board.

Worse, MacDonald was utterly miserable. "Nothing felt right to me," she says. "I was always crying and never smiling." (New Scientist, May 19, 2009)

There is no one way to cope with an anxiety disorder. Speaking from personal experience with another form of it, depression, the best way to cope is to be open about having it while trying to meet it head-on.

No doubt people are wondering if this is a cover for some other reason Hudon decided Cornell wasn't working for him. However, with all the societal stigma, who would embellish such a claim just to get in a better hockey situation?

It's not clear yet if Hudon will join the Tigres full time. He told Plamondon his options are still option and those include returning to Cornell for the second semester of the school year. It bears noting that someone who had an OCD-induced crisis will not just be made whole with a snap of the fingers; it takes time to be ready to come back. He is a very well touted player, though, and would be a help to any team. One hopes Hudon's in a good space where he can help keep that mental health ailment at bay; he's already got enough of a challenge working to make it in hockey.

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/11/red_wings_jan_mursak_skating_b.html

Detroit Red Wings forward Jan Mursak skated by himself before Monday's practice and estimated that he's 2-3 weeks away from returning from his broken ankle (Sept. 25).

It was the third time Mursak has skated by himself since the injury.

“It felt good to just cruise around and get back into it,'' Mursak said. "It feels pretty good, no pain, it’s just that I need to get comfortable with my ankle and all of the moves that you need to do.

"I was just doing some circling around, no stops-and-starts. I started doing some tight turns and it felt pretty good, so we’ll start doing more in the next few days and we’ll see how it goes.”

Mursak doesn't think he'll accompany the team on its three-game trip that starts Friday in Buffalo. He'll stay home and continue skating and hopefully join the team for practice when it returns.

“I actually feel pretty good just cruising around, but I need to get back into hockey shape,'' Mursak said. "I’ve been working hard in the gym the whole time that I was injured, but the ankle still needs to get back into hockey shape to be totally ready. I’d say that I’m probably about 50-60 percent ready.”
I really hope that Mursak can get his skating back up to where it was before his ankle injury. He can just flat-out fly.

Prospect Updates for 11/30:

Notes

  • Tomas Tatar (Grand Rapids, AHL) has nine points in his last six games
  • Mattias Backman (Linkoping, SEL) has scored his first goal in the Swedish Elite League. He’s averaging more than 15 minutes per game
  • Dick Axelsson (MoDo, SEL) has returned from hernia surgery
  • Right-winger Teemu Pulkkinen (Jokerit, SM-Liiga) is in a bit of a slump, goalless in seven games with just six points in his past 15
  • Philippe Hudon has said he is planning to play in the QMJHL with Victoriaville, although it’s not official yet
  • Marek Tvrdon (Vancouver, WHL) is 17th in WHL scoring, and because he is still considered a rookie, he’s tops among first-year players
  • Thomas McCollum (Grand Rapids, AHL) has regained his footing somewhat, posting respectable numbers in a call-up to the Griffins. He has a 3.08 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in five starts
  • Petr Mrazek (Ottawa, OHL) suddenly finds his goals-against average above 3.00 after going 3.67 in November. Yet his team is first in the OHL’s Eastern Conference
  • Andrej Nestrasil, Trevor Parkes and Gleason Fournier have been assigned to the ECHL, where they’ll get much-needed ice time
  • Alexei Marchenko (CSKA Moscow, KHL) has been named to Russia's preliminary roster for the World Junior Championships. He has also returned to light practices with CSKA Moscow, so the knee injury doesn't seem as severe as originally expected
  • TSN is reporting that the Red Wings have been scouting college free agent Dan Dekeyser (Western Michigan University, NCAA). Another unsigned college free agent of interest on the same team is the small, but skilled Dennis Brown, his defensive partner

  • Brent Raedeke is heating up. He has three goals and three assists in his past six contests and nine points in his past 15 games. The defensive ace had just one point in his first 14 games
  • Xavier Ouellet is on fire lately, having piled up five goals and an assist in his past three games and 11 points in his past nine contests. His 12 goals in 35 games are second in the QMJHL to Buffalo Sabres free-agent signing Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, who has 20 goals in 36 games
  • Joakim Andersson has appeared in three NHL games since his first career recall from AHL Grand Rapids. Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock told MLive.com Andersson is “probably going to be a third- or fourth-line center” but that he needs “more pace in his game.”
  • Griffins head coach Curt Fraser raved about Tomas Tatar's all-around play to the Grand Rapids Press. “He’s doing so many good things,” Fraser told the paper. “Killing penalties, power play, his overall puck control has been tremendous and his work ethic has been real good.”
