It would be nice, but that's just the business. It's a meat market: it started at the cattle auction we call the draft, they're bought and sold and traded through their careers, and then they're put out to pasture when the club has better options.
In the meantime, Mike Modano's made many millions of dollars from his contract and endorsements, so don't feel too too bad for him.
