Default Nieuwendyk is back

Quote:
The Toronto Maple may not be adding any All-Stars to the ice this off-season, but that hasn't stopped them from adding one to the evolving front-office.

Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher has announced that former-Leaf Joe Nieuwendyk has been named the hockey club's special assistant to the general manager.

"Joe is an extremely intelligent individual, who has experienced success throughout his entire hockey career," said Fletcher in a statement. "We will value his contributions on all hockey decisions and he will be a great asset to our organization."

The Maple Leafs were stymied in their first attempt to add Nieuwendyk to the front-office, when the Jacques Martin and the Florida Panthers denied the Leafs permission to talk to Nieuwendyk until his contract expired on June 30.

In 1,257 NHL games, Nieuwendyk collected 564 goals and 562 assists for 1,126 points. Nieuwendyk played in 64 games for Toronto in 2003-04 and recorded 22 goals and 28 assists and won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1999 as the Stanley Cup playoffs most valuable player.

I really like the route the Leafs are taking behind the scenes. They are adding good people who are former Leaf players. If you look at Detroit, they've done the same thing, and things are working out there. I dont see why it wouldnt here.

Welcome back Nieuwendyk

Great pickup. This is a guy who is a smart hockey guy, who will be working alongside Fletcher to gain knowledge. Hopefully the new GM decides to keep him on next year, but regardless this team needs a hockey department for this year.

This is truly one of the best signinings this off season, he brings a whole lot of excellent hockey sense to the team.

With guys like Coates, Gilmour, and him in player development it says that there are some people in the ivory tower who really do want what is best for the team......

Who's to say that Fletcher isn't grooming Nieuwyndyk to be the next Leaf's GM? He was already the special assistant down south. It's obviously a great move by the Leafs and a great step in their rebuilding process.

The only thing I find strange is that he decided to go with the Leafs. I thought he would have owed his allegiance with the Flames or Stars. You know how a player has played with a couple different teams, but his time with one team is what everybody knows him for. Like Gretzky to Edmonton, Bourque to Boston, Jagr to Pittsburgh and etc.

Anyways, Gilmour and Nieuwendyk will be an awesome combo, great pickup.

He was born and raised in Southern Ontario, he has come back to his roots. Forget everything else the Leafs have done this season. This is by far the best move of them all.

He should be a stud, but Newy is more important to the overall picture.
