Default Minor Cap eval.

Looking at our current situation and trying to see the movement we have both in the cap and with internal roster improvements. Now, with neither a coach or a general manager, I have little idea the direction the leafs will be going, but as it stands now, down maybe the only way.

Currently players who are signed into next season are:

MCCABE, BRYAN D TOR 5,750,000
BLAKE, JASON L TOR 4,000,000
KUBINA, PAVEL D TOR 5,000,000
KABERLE, TOMAS D TOR 4,250,000
TUCKER, DARCY R TOR 3,000,000
BELL, MARK L TOR 2,166,667
RAYCROFT, ANDREW G TOR 2,000,000
ANTROPOV, NIKOLAI C TOR 2,050,000
PONIKAROVSKY, ALEXEI L TOR 2,105,000
TOSKALA, VESA G TOR 4,000,000
COLAIACOVO, CARLO D TOR 1,283,333
STEEN, ALEXANDER C TOR 900,600
KULEMIN, NIKOLAI L TOR 1,487,500
TLUSTY, JIRI C TOR 855,000
WHITE, IAN D TOR 850,000
POGGE, JUSTIN G TOR 683,333
BATTAGLIA, BATES (JON) L TOR 650,000
EARL, ROBERT L TOR 600,000
STRALMAN, ANTON D TOR 731,667
DEVEREAUX, BOYD C TOR 575,000
BOYCE, DARRYL C TOR 525,000
AUBIN, BRENT R TOR 491,667
ORESKOVIC, PHIL D TOR 508,333
KRONVALL, STAFFAN D TOR 487,500
NEWBURY, KRIS C TOR 475,000
WALSER, DERRICK D TOR 512,500
WILLIAMS, JEREMY R TOR 487,500

Up and coming RFAs being:
Stajan, Wellwood, Harrison, Mitchell, Ondrus, Harrington, Sifers, Cashman, Foster,

Up and Coming FAs being:
Sundin, Moore, Cleemson, Wozniewski, Ling, Pohl,

With the current signed players if we made a roster it would be something a long the lines of:
Forwards:
Steen 0.9 million
Antropov 2 million
Devereaux .575 million
Tlusty .855 million
Tucker 3 million
Blake 4 million
Bell 2.2 million
Ponikarski 2.1 million
Williams .5 million
Earl .6 million
Newbury .475 million
Battaglia .650
Kuleimen 1.478 million

19.33 million

Defence
McCabe 5.75
Kaberle 4.25
Kubinia 5
Coliacovo 1.3
White .85
Stralman .75

17.9

Goalies
Toskala 4
Raycroft 2

6

Total Cap 43.23 million
Current cap 50.3 million
Currently have 7.07 million under cap

So we have to resign Stajan and Wellwood, Stajan will most likely run about 1.2-1.8 million where Wellwood will be around 1 million. With any luck we will have shed Kubinia in the off season during his No-Trade recess, and I would be in favour of sending Raycroft to the minors, with any luck he will be taken up in waivers, if these two things have we clear up 7 million more in the cap, and what I suggest we do with that is… nothing! If we sign some minor third liners and such , and bomb the season and grab a good pick here or there, this team might be able to make a legit movement in two or three years when some bigger name contracts expire. On the brighter side of live though, I would be delighted to see Williams, Earl, and Stralman come out of camp this off season with legit spots on the roster, and with any luck Coli can go for over 40 games this season.

Exclamation

I was also reading some of our prospect reports on hockeysfutures.com and there seems to be some very impressive young guns up and coming through the wood works. Justin Pogge (who played phenomenal last against the Wolves for his first playoff game, coming in round three). Justin seems to have finally adjusted to the AHL and seems to be excelling, with Toskala in for the next two seasons Pogge obviously is going to be a main stay on the Marlies for a third season but I would like to think his first taste of the NHL could come about during injuries or just poor play.

Moving up on our prospect depth charts is the great Nik Kulemin, he is going to be a Maple Leaf next season, no if ands or but. He didn't turn so many heads this season with an awesome highlight real of goals, but he has allegedly developed a strong defensive game while maintaining a 20 plus goal season in the Super League. He is said to be either a Gary Roberts forward, offence/hitting, or he is Darcy Tucker forward, scoring depth/energy guy. Either way the excitement around him will most likely increase during the summer.

Jiri Tlusty comes in at number three. I liked what I saw from him though I am hoping for an increase in offence, I think if we can start giving him some more minutes, which is very likely if Sundin is not resigned, I think Tlusty will avoid the slump and merely become the well rounded first line winger he was drafted as.

Fourth is Anton Stralman. This guy had an impressive end of the season, he seems to have the confidence to perform in the NHL now, something that had made him seemingly invisible at the beginning of the season. I would love to see Stralman come out of Training Camp this season with a perminate job on the roster, on my personal depth charts of the team he is in the 6th position and if Kubinia is dump this off season he can only move up, with any luck we will not go chasing waterfalls and try to bring back Gill in the off-season or something.

Now for the guy I had introduced in my Caber's Pretraining Camp Predictions thread, the newest Russian dynamo on our roster, Dimitri Vorobiev. This guy was an okay offensive presence in the Super League last season with a heavy hand when it come to hitting and defence, but this season he broke out offensively and take position #7 on my defensive depth charts, moving up from #10. I would like to see him in NA next year possibly on the Marlies, but it is currently unknown whether he wants to come her yet, and if he does I think it will be for a position on the Leafs. I would love it if Kubinia left and we would have room for a second of our young defensive core like Vorobiev or Kronwall/Harrison.

After that comes Robbie Earl who seemed unimpressive in the NHL this season but apparently tore it up in the AHL. I would like to see him develop a little more in the AHL before making a full leap into the big leagues but if his development stays the course he could be the depth scoring this franchise needs on the wing.

Then there is NCAA prospect Tyler Ruegsegger how apparently had an awful season, good start disrupted by injury and zero finish. He is apparently undersized and slow off the start but a great lateral mover which would indicate a potentials for strong defensive play, though no reliance on the leafs next season.

Then there was our Top pick from last season's draft, Dale Mitchell, our only OHL prospect. He was not as good as projected this season, sharing the load with McClean and Tavares on the Bulldogs seemed like an opportunity to flourish but he had a slow start but picked up in December. He still has next season on the Bulldogs to show he has what it takes for at least the AHL.

Following our loan OHL prospect is James Reimer the goalie of Red Deer Rebels, and our only WHL prospect. He had an okay season on a bad team. He has one season available in the WHL, and with Pogge seemingly having the Marlies Job uncontested, Reimer's future is unknown as of yet. I think he may be brought into the Marlies as a back up, or possibly used as trade abit as his stock is seemingly raising around the league.

Then there is NCAA North Dakota prospect Matt Frattin who had a third line roster role in his freshmen year. He is suppose to have a tremendous upside but on the deep ND team he was given the job of energy guy and apparently excelled in it. The true value of this player though will only be determined I believe in the next two or three seasons.

Now for the only prospect we have in the Q. Chris DiDomenico. He had a fantastic season last year, went undrafted into the Q and made it on the Sea Dogs on their maiden season, he turned some head last year, but this year he was leading the league in points for much of the season and shows fantastic leadership. He is a player i am very excited to see in later years. He is a fighter, defensive player, power play specialist, and a general offensive threat. He is playing at least another season in the Q, but I think next season we will hear a lot more about this guy.

Ranked #12 on our Prospect list is NCAA U. of Michigan prospect Ben Winnett. He had very little offence playing on the fourth line in his freshman season, but is fast and in a great development program in Michigan. He was also on the top PK, and as a freshman on a team as deep at Michigan that is a fantastic outlook.

Then for NCAA Colorado, Chad Rau. He is eligibly weak in the lower body, but was 22nd in the country for points 42 in 40 games. and has been consistently a top scorer in college. He will be in his final year in college next season and it will be interesting to see if he can make the jump into the AHL/NHL or if he will meander in the Euro leagues.

AHL prospect John Mitchell continues to improve his offensive numbers in this his 3rd AHL season, though he is more of a defensive specialist. Some have him projected to be so much as a third liner on the big club and I could see him dancing around as a fringe guy going into next season, especially if we can shed some no trade garbage from our forward lines.

Then dropping down to 15th overall is prospect Jeremy Williams. He had a rough start season this year, he is coming off of the knee injury of last season and constant almosts with the big league, Jeremy Williams seems to be a turning point that will end with him as Euro leaguer or NHL player next season. I hope for the later, as he has in him to be a fantastic offensive presence and a great leadership character.

Phil Oreskovic, he played well for the Marlies after Stralman was called up, having a +14, and he uses his size effectively, he is a great shut down guy though he seems to lack the mobility to be effective in the NHL as of yet. Whether the potential is there or not I don't know but he is hard working and huge. So that should count for something.

Jurja Mikus out of Slovakia was a low draft pick that some think has the ability to be a sleeper pick that may be talked about in latter years. He did well at the World Juniors and is big, a little light, at 6'4", 198 Ibs. He has a dynamite of a shot and is thought to be able to make a jump into the AHL next season if he shows interest.

Korbinian Holzer is a German Elite prospect on the raise, when he was drafted in the 6th round two years ago not much was talked about him, but he is now one of the youngest players in the German Elite league, he is a deceptively effective hitter, and he is an okay offensive threat from the blue line though his bread and butter is his shut down capabilities which seem to have been the reason for his raising stalk. His speed plays much into his development and he seems difficult to get around.

The second last prospect I am going to mention now is Viktor Stalberg LW NCAA prospect coming out of Vermont he lead the team in goals and had a strong season has the baggage to be a useful power forward with a defensive edge and he is gritty and quick and is projected to make large strides up this list.

Finishing the list as prospect #20 is AHL/NHL forward Alex Foster. He had a bad first season with the Marlies and was said not even to be considered for the team this season he started in the ECHL and finished as one of the Marlies top forwards. Foster is a great playmaking centre with the touch around the net to have him considered for a top six prospect on the Marlies this season.

This is the list from http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article...ts_spring2008/
these paragraphs are based on my own scouting around the AHL and OHL, and league stat pages and hockeysfuture.com reports which I have read very thoroughly over the last two days. What I like the most about this is almost all of these guys have projected NHL poetical except for guys like Oreskovic.

I am currently producing a personal depth chart including prospects and players, right now I am comfortable with my knowledge of our defence, and am currently looking deeper into our forwards, especially the prospect levels developing from the NCAA where there seems a lot of promise. Hope you all enjoyed the read.

I think Wellwood will be traded at the draft along with Kubina to try and pick up another first round pick and later picks.

I think Raycrofts days are numbered in Toronto. What the Leafs will try to do is make a move with a team like L.A who are looking for a goalie and aquire a late pick OR he will be a throw in into a later trade.

Also, I dont want to see Darcy bought out. Rumour has it, he will be, but I dont understand the point, he's not a bad player, nor is he hindering to the team. I also believe he has some value on the market if he were willing to move his no trade clause.

The only RFAs that will be resigned are:
Stajan, Wellwood, Harrison, maybe Ondrus

UFA signings:
Maybe Snats, Clemmenson

The other ones dont really matter in my opinion.

As for prospects, depending on their training camp, Earl, Kulemin, Vorobiev, Kronwall, Harrison. Will all start in the AHL. Personally I would prefer if Tlusty got some tuning in the AHL as well where he could play more often and have an impact.

As for this draft, I hope they draft Cody Hodgson. The Leafs have a late 2nd rounder, where they will probably draft a winger.

As for the Roster:

Goalies:
Vesa Toskala
Justin Pogge*
Scott Clemmensen

* Assuming the Leafs dont sign a UFA backup.
Possible backups:

David Aebischer
Wade Dubielewicz
Stephen Valiquette

Defense:
McCabe-Kaberle
Coliacovo-Defensive defensemen*
White-Kronwall
7th:Stralman
8th:Harrison

Possible defensemen:
Brad Stuart
Mattias Norstrom
Adam Foote
Jason Smith

Forwards:

Jason Blake*-Mats Sundin*-Nik Antropov
Alexei Ponikarovsky- UFA - Alexander Steen
Jiri Tlusty-Matt Stajan-Darcy Tucker (if not traded)
Jeremy Williams- UFA/Prospect - UFA/Prospect

Possible Centers:
Brendan Morrison
Daymond Langkow
Vaclav Prospal
Jason Williams
4th line:
Patrick Rissmiller
Curtis Brown
Dominic Moore

*Blake could also be traded away. We might get two roster players for him ( 2 players who are 2 million each maybe?)

Depth Chart on Defence including RFA

8)Walsar
9)Harrison*
10)Sifers*
11)Cashman*
12)Mikus
13)Holzer
14)Harrington*

I moved Kubina down becasue I think he is completely useless in the Toronto Maple Leafs uniform, he not in the Maple's future and he needs to leave. He is talented but has proven he does not work in Toronto. I moved White above Coliacovo simply becasue Coli's injuries are beyond rediculious now.

Depth Chart at Forward including RFAs not FAs

1) Antropov
2) Stajan*
3) Steen
4) Tucker
5) Blake
6) Ponikarovsky
7) Devereaux
8) Tlusty

18) Ondrus*
19) Frattin
20) Mitchell
21) DiDomenico
22) Ruegsegger

24) Stalberg

The top twelve on this chart are not the twelve I would have in my ideal line ups.

Goalies
1) Toskala
2) Pogge
3) Raycroft
4) Reimer

Finalizing my first lines as such:

Blake-Stajan-Tucker
Antropov-Wellwood-Kulemin

See the Leafs are the only team in the world who wouldnt give a shot to Jay Harrison.
Who score 13 goals this year in the AHL.

As for Bell, is he serving his time straight through or does he get a release for the NHL season?

The Leafs roster will change from what you have there, I'm certain of it. Last year, we proved we were a good team when everyone is healthy. Honestly, MLSE wont allow us to drop into the first overall pick. I dont think I need to explain why...

First off if I wouldn't resign any of our RFAs it would probably be Ondrus, Mitchell and Foster are must resigns they have done so much on the Marlies they could prove to be fairly talented third liners in the NHL.

As for FAs I would like to think Sundin's days as a Leaf will have ended because he is going to do more harm then good for this organization, it is time to commit to the rebuild. The Leafs have finally developed a good core of prospects all looking quite promising, but there is a need for this franchise to build from that. Though I would not mind seeing Moore return, I think I would be lying if I would not miss him.

As for FAs this season I think the market is going to be unforgiving if we try to jump into the must make the playoffs mode again. The leafs are going to need to sign younger guys who have yet to reach potential and possible scout some late bloomers that reside in the Euro leagues, one that I have always liked is Canucks property, Brendon Reid, he is quick and creative, just weak shot.

As for Trading Wellwood, I would prefer not too, he had one bad season I would like to think he will recover from that, especially with guys like Kulemin coming to Toronto and such, Wellwood is really the only offensively creative player we have in our ranks.

Tucker shouldn't be bought out, and he can't be traded, he might as well stay in Leafdom and help raise players to his simularities like Kulemin or Mitchell.

Blake cannot be traded, his contract is too long and he is too expensive. He is either bought out or a Leafer for live.

Bell I think will be in Jail till mid October, but he still is under contract after that, and I can't imagine it would be too bad to keep him on, he is not the offensive threat he once was in Chicago but he certainly is a hard hitting fore checker that can be useful on any checking line.

As for Harrison, he is a great talent, but I can't see him being any better then the guys we have, there are only so many positions on the team and unless we loss Kubina, McCabe and one of White, Coliacovo, or Stralman then we are not going to see Harrison in the game until everyone is down with injury, or one of our young guns is a complete flop.

As for the Leafs proving something, all they did prove was this team is good when there is no exception to win, they neither have the drive or the maturity to win when the pressure is on, which is why they will only ever be close to the playoffs unless we rebuild.

Also top five Leaf prospects ready to make the Jump:
Kulemin
Tlusty
Stralman
John Mitchell
Vorobeiv

Top five to watch out of the NHL next season:
DiDomenico
Pogge
Ruegsegger
Frattin
Dale Mitchell

I am also excited to think of John Mitchell making the team next season. He won't get more then 10 goals most likely but he has developed a fantastic defensive game and he could be an ideal centre for our shut down line if Stajan or Steen are forced into the top six.

Devereaux-Mitchell-Steen would be an awesome third line if Mitchell continues his development.

Actually I just read now that Bell is sentenced to work in a Calaforina jail from June 2nd-August 15th this year and then this will all be dealt with.

Well we are getting a better image of what this franchise is going to look like next season:

Kulemin-Steen-Antropov
Blake-Stajan-Tlusty
Devereaux-Mitchell-Bell
Earl-Williams-Ponikarovsky

Kaberle-Coliacovo
McCabe-Stralman
White-Kronwall/Vorobeiv

Toskala
?

I don't see much in the way of of top six centres, and maybe that should be an area of concern in our near future.

Kubina will be back the defense will look like:

Kaberle - Kubina
Colaiacovo - McCabe
Stralman - White/Schenn

With it probable that one of Colaiacovo/White/McCabe is traded.
