Media propaganda. They were 14-13-6 before he got injured.
That's 14 wins and 19 losses. It matters not.

They were 7-16 when McCabe was out from Dec 16 to Feb 6. 6 and 4 since his return. 14-18 before he got hurt. The Leafs are slightly better team with him in the lineup.

The Leafs have a quite poor record with him out of the lineup.
People seem to underestimate his leadership both on and off ice. While he was injured I heard some banter by hockey beat writers in Toronto wondering whether Kaberle was making McCabe better, or based on Kabs struggles without him, perhaps vice versa.

Then maybe he should take up the pom poms and take to the ice during intermissions, because he does spit when it comes to actually playing Hockey.
Or how about a Coaching if they need to keep him that badly.

Not only is he not good defencively; he's horrible! He's a defencive liability. And it's true, he can't hit - I've been saying that for years. I't'll be hard to find any footage of him throwing a shoulder-to-shoulder check, because there probably isn't one. He can't do one, and I doubt anyone will be able to show one.
He also makes the same mistakes over and over and over again, year after year, after year like he's 28 or something. What kind of veteran defenceman is that? This guy is a bottom pairing defenceman at best. He's one of those players who should be limited to 10 minutes a game and mostly used on the powerplay only (if at all), yet he makes what $5.75M-$7.15M? (I've heard a million different numbers in that range). This guy should be making $1M-$3M and bouncing about from team to team as an "extra". It's only because he's on the Leafs that he's been able to keep above surface for so long. They've had 3 chances since 2003 to dump this guy, but they just don't want to let him go - as if other teams are ever lined up for his services.
But that's what always happens. We overrate our players. If Fletcher could have let him for for free or waived him or anything (except the dreaded buyout if it hurts them too much cap-wise), I'd hope it goes through, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Amen brother. By the way, the only thing about his contract that I do like is that every year from now the money gets less. Also, I don't admire his fighting technique of closing his eyes, looking the other way, and swinging like he's hitting an invisible speed bag. Or the banned can-opener-turned-reverse ass check......and this year he is getting paid $7.15 million dollars. Go figure
