Againigan style rebuilding.
Popular opinion may be that you need to trade Sundin in order to accelerate the rebuilding process and while there is no doubt trading Sundin would definitely help, I believe the key to rebuilding is trading Toskala.
The leafs appear to be committed to rebuilding, a process that won't start to produce competitive teams for another two to four years. By that time Pogge should have a firm grasp on the no. 1 job in Toronto.
If I'm running the Leafs and god willing, one day I shall, here's what I do.
I try and package Toskala with another player or two (Antropov? Ponikarovsky?) and offer them up to one of the goalie deprived, cellar dwelling teams (LA, Chi. or TB) in an attempt to pry away their 1st round pick this year.
L.A. would be the team I focus on. They are loaded with good, young prospects and would (in my opinion) give up their 1st round pick before Chicago or Tampa. They have their core players and don't really need another top 5 pick to develop. They need a no. 1 goalie. Now.
That would give me two top 5 picks in what is regarded as a pretty good draft year with the added bonus that a full 2009 of Raycroft starting and Pogge backing him up would pretty much guarantee another top 10 pick next year. 2010 is when it's starts to come together. Pogge takes over starting duties, my two top 5 picks from 08, my top 10 pick from 09 and the prospects from any potential Sundin deal would give me a good young core to work with.
As far as the rest of the team is concerned, Tucker, Antropov, Ponikarovsky, Blake, McCabe and Kubina are players who need to leave. I'm not sure I would get much for Tucker or McCabe and Antropov/Ponikarovsky would be part of the Toskala package. I put Blake and Kubina on waivers, let them clear, send them down and pray someone claims them on re-entry.
