Leafs might be forced to resort to buyouts - (Players not willing to waive NMCs?)
Well... no one said it would be easy, but from here on we'll be able to see out in the open how much this orgnisation is willing to sacrifice to set things right.

Expensive escape hatch
Leafs might be forced to resort to buyouts
By LANCE HORNBY -- Sun Media
With Cliff Fletcher apparently in for a tough fight getting any high-priced Maple Leafs to waive their no-trade clauses, the club could be resorting to a buyout or two.
It was suggested by a panel on Hockey Night In Canada on Saturday that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. already has put aside millions to clear the decks should interim general manager Fletcher's hands be tied at the trade deadline on Feb. 26.
"That's obviously an option open to all National Hockey League teams," Richard Peddie, CEO/president of MLSEL, said yesterday. "But we aren't focusing on that right now."
While Mats Sundin is reaching the end of a one-year contract and seems to be leaning toward re-signing as opposed to waiving his no-trade clause, forward Darcy Tucker and defencemen Pavel Kubina, Bryan McCabe and Tomas Kaberle all indicate they will dig in their heels if asked to go.
The idea of demoting players or reducing ice time also has been raised, but Fletcher has said he won't demean veterans in such a way. But if he can't perform any of those hocus-pocus, salary-cap-relief moves that Lou Lamoriello did in New Jersey a couple of years ago, that leaves buyouts. It's an expensive escape hatch, but one that must be considered for one or two Leafs.

My thoughts: If it can be done, do it! This team is a mess, built by people who don't know what they're doing. A lot of players need to be let go of, and if they're not willing to be traded they should be bought out so they can continue to make the same screw ups that they never learn from on some other team.

But we're prepared for all the bumps and pratfalls and potholes in the road ahead. I'm prepared for it anyway, or I wouldn't have come." - Ron Wilson, Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Here is an interesting take on why it doesn't make much sense right now:

Leafs could make many moves
TheFourthPeriod.com
With the trade deadline three weeks away, the Maple Leafs could be one of the busiest clubs come Feb. 26, reports the Toronto Star.
In addition to Mats Sundin, the Leafs could move the likes of Jason Blake, Nik Antropov, Darcy Tucker, Bryan McCabe, Matt Stajan and Pavel Kubina.
"I'm just a player, whatever is going to happen is going to happen," Antropov told the Star.
Antropov's preference is to stay in Toronto, but he admitted that, "it's not up to me. Ask [GM] Cliff Fletcher."
There have been plenty of teams scouting the Leafs over the past few games, with as many as 17 scouts taking in Saturday's contest.
The Star notes many of the Leafs' trading candidates have no-trade and no-movement clauses, which will make them difficult to deal.
"I signed here to play here," McCabe told the paper. "I want to be here. That stuff really doesn't affect me."

Way I see it is, McCabe isnt that bad, and he wont be able to be moved. Before injury, his defensive play was actually pretty solid.
With Kubina, we can still put him down in the minors, and he would have to clear waivers. I doubt someone will pick him up for 5 million, however on the way up, he'd be 2.5 million... we would get claims then...
Q: If my scenario with Kubina happens, is it 2.5 million for this yr only or all of them

If this does get executed, look at quite a few GMs thinking twice before doing no-trade clauses in the future.

Except having zero chance of ever signing a free agent again.
Look at Jersey and the free agents they attracted. They are damn lucky they still have Marty.

Toronto will always attact players.
Boys going up idealizing the Leafs arent going to change their minds because a mediocore player who makes star money was sent on waivers.
Anaheim has done the same thing, to clear cap room (Bryz) and they werent critized.
The league is a business first. Us Leaf fans know that best.

They waived Bryz knowing full well he would be claimed, not to clear cap room. It was a promise to him. Toronto has NOT been able to attract tier 1 free agents for quite a while now. Only tier 2 guys that they have overpaid for.
They need to keep it smart and treat their players well, let them know that its a great place to play, not cut lose the players when they created the problem.
