Funny you mentioned this as this was a "closed" door lottery selection and it just so happens to go to a team that was about to go bankrupt. So very convenient that Crosby should go to the Penguins and now they are no longer in financial trouble.

I would definitely accept Bobby Clarke as the GM. Of all the available people out there, he would be a good choice and would definitely not let anyone push him around. But, Hitchcock is already with another team so, no-go there.

If you look at the Leaf's lineup now compared to what Burns had to work with back in the early/mid 90s, he would have a much better team to work with now. Granted, he had Gilmour, who is irreplaceable on ANY team, but the collection of talent on this team would be better. I mean, we had borechevsky (sp?) for goodness sake. How much did he weight? Like 130lbs?

I don't know if this team is better. In fact I would say that this team is NOT better.
Potvin in his prime was as good as anyone in the league. And look the D:
Todd Gill/Dave Ellett
Jamie Macoun/Bob Rouse
Sylvain Lefebvre/Drake Berehowsky
Was never going to put up huge points, but it was solid.
The top line of Andreychuk, Gilmour, Clarke
well lets just say that everyone of them is better than all current Leafs players not named Sundin.
Then you throw in guys like Glenn Anderson, Mike Foligno, Peter Zezel, those guys have some character (which almost no one on the Leafs these days does).
With the exception of Gilmour those teams didn't have star power, but they were solid top to bottom.
That is what is missing with this Leafs team, any sort of character, or chemistry.

I'll agree that this team is not better, but only because the quality of a team is ultimately measured by results. On paper, however, the current Leaf squad is better than the Leafs of the early 90s, who overachieved due to a level of hard work / hustle that this team hasn't had in years and a good system. I think that's what the original poster was driving at.
And a little nit-picking:
- the top line was Andreychuk - Gilmour - Boreshevsky (sp?) ... Clark played on the second line.
- Lefebvre was usually paired with Macoun on the shut-down unit. I miss that blueline. Steady, steady, steady.

And can you believe that the power play back then was Dave Ellett and I think Todd Gill? I mean, compare them to Kaberle and McCabe. And yet, we can't score on the PP this year.
And man, I sure miss Dougie. I wish we had another Dougie about now. If we could only get another GM like Cliff Fletcher and make a huge lopsided trade for a Gilmour-like player. I remember just before the trade for Dougie, the team was stinking it up like we are now. Could there be a second coming of Dougie? One can only hope I guess.
