Default leafs first in NHL in goals scored, first in NHL for goals allowed

This is as of monday morning, we can clearly see this team has zero offensive issues, and hopefully will continue scoring a lot of goals. But at the same time this isn't the 80s where you need 5-6 goals per game to win, Leafs need drastic changes in their defensive play. end of story.

IMHO the biggest problem we have is with our coaching staff.

Dude I love Maurice, I think he's one of the best out there. I think what it comes down to:
1. lack of speed on our blueline
2. Too many penalties ( 28th in the league, last i checked)
3. Defensive zone coverage.

Maybe 3 is Maurices fault, but ultametly it comes down to the Leafs defensemen and forwards to come back and just keep it simple.

An interesting note...
We have the most expensive defense core in the league (21 million give to cap), yet we let the most goals per game.

Too many penalties can also be chalked up to coaching just as much as the players.

I'm not sure about that.

I think penalties are an individual thing.

A lot of them comes from either being too lazy, too agressive, or just too slow (a combination in some cases). Some players are just the way they are when it comes to penalties, and I don't think a new Coach will change that.

That's expecially the case with Wade Belak, Bryan McCabe, Nik Antropov, and arguably Mats Sundin to a lesser extent (for example). That's the way they've always been.

It's a matter of which players are worth the trouble that comes along with them, and which players aren't.

Is this not also a coaching issue? He(they) are the ones that are suppose to put the system in place. If players aren't buying into that system (ie. keeping it simple), sit them for a few shifts?
